Michael Sackstein says:

It’s probably a good idea to have the head machined & cleaned out even if there’s no evidence of damage at least you’ll be putting on a nice clean resurfaced head, which is probably better for the engine anyways.

richpin06a says:

You got it covered pretty good.

hnkfsh81 says:

Wow, I think I’ll check the state of the water pump on my daughter’s SW2 this week. I’ve read that I should remove the belt and see what kind of movement the pulley on the pump has and also see if it is weeping near the bottom. Any other tips to check its status. We bought it used and don’t know when the pump was replace last.

elreydepool says:

how much did you charge this person. or how much you think this might run up to?

richpin06a says:

The Saturn 1.9L has one head gasket.

XXX957TRO says:

I was wondering does my 1997 Saturn sl1 1.9L have a upper and lower head gasket I just replaced the k frame my self first time doing something like that took me for ever

Gabriel Velazquez says:

Bolts should not be removed and then oiled, and re-torqued. This stretches the bolts and affects their clamping ability. Bolts are torque to yield, and old bolts should be discarded.

Gabriel Velazquez says:

There is an honest mistake performed here when torquing the head bolts. Rich followed as per Haynes manual but this is incorrect. New bolts should be used, clean threads, and the specs are 22 ft/lbs, 33 ft/lbs, and then an additional 90 degrees. Haynes is very wrong here, and this is detrimental to the life of the gasket.

richpin06a says:

I would say this is a hard job for a first timer.

Skittle McFrittle says:

Would you say that this is something that would be hard to do for the first time. Also is there any tools that you would say are out of a budget or were u could rent them

richpin06a says:

If i had this problem i might try to move the bolt with a chisel to a point were i could remove it with vice gripes.

smokeymcpot851 says:

Hey richpin what should I do if I have a stripped bolt on my oil pan into the timing cover there isn’t much space to work with its the second one from the left and its keeping me from replacing my gasket

James Hudson says:

i am impressed; last december i had my head gasket replaced on my eclipse and had a valve job; this stuff was far to in-depth for me and i wanted everything done right

Jon Barker says:

Yes Sir !!! I* totally forgot about that video man. i’ve been following your Saturn vids since ’09. Sometimes I just expect to much out of myself and even though I think I’m following standard procedures note for note I still forget to plug a sensor or wire in or have a bolt or two left over. Your videos are a true inspiration for technical data work though Rich. Without them I’d be broke and taking the bus. lol

richpin06a says:

Jon check out my latest video were i try to address that flashing coolant light it might answer some questions..

Jon Barker says:

Hey Rich !!! I got ‘er up and running finally. Thanks for all your help man. Really, I mean it. you a true American folk hero. I do not mind paying a mechanic to do work for me. However, it is so hard to find an honest one. Thanks to great guys as yourself and others as Old Nuc from Saturn fans I was able to do this myself.
The only thing that is going on now is that the temperature thermometer light is flashing. Any ideas why ?I got you tons of clicks on the way !!!!

Jon Barker says:

Sounds good to me. Thanks Rich. I ordered them from the dealer and the 8 mm deep wall socket fits the old ones perfect.

richpin06a says:

I have not install these plugs before so i am not sure if they need sealer or not.I know the old core plugs were just driven in.

Jon Barker says:

Good morning Rich. Sorry to bother you on the weekend. I found another minor flaw in my re- manufactured ’98 DOHC head, lol They forgot to install the 3 oil galley plugs. 1 behind each cam and one near the large hex coolant plug. However, I ordered the plugs from dealership. My question is would you happen to know if I need to put a little sealer or any grease on those before I lightly tap them in with the appropriate sized socket ? Thanks !!!!!

curtis cook says:

thank you, this is a big help for i am a mechanic of my own an this was very helpful. im putting new head gasket on my 97 saturn sl1 along with all gaskets an flanges. i subscribed an hopefully could use more help from you.

Jon Barker says:

I see. That makes complete sense. once you have the bolts hand tighten, about how many 1/4 turns did it take you to get to 22 Ft. lbs ? I’m guessing like 2-3. I guess I should start practicing on something.

richpin06a says:

Jon it is not the head that determines the procedure of torquing it is because of the NEW bolts.

Jon Barker says:

Hi Rich, Do I have to torque 22, then 33 take the bolts out then oil and torque again on a re-manufatured head. Or is it only one time, two passes, then the 90 degree final for a refurb or a new head.

richpin06a says:

Yes it is ok that is the way i like to do it.

Jon Barker says:

Good morning Rich. Is it OK to hand tighten all the bolts first then do the torque process.

richpin06a says:

There is a little difference because of the two cams involved. At this time i do not have a video on the DOHC.

nickk05281982 says:

is this the same process for a dohc if so do you have a different vid?

TOXIXIFY says:

My whole family didn’t even know there was such a thing as differential fluid.

richpin06a says:

On this SOHC engine the TDC mark on the crank gear is at TDC when it lines up with the mark on the block in the 12 o’clock position.

Danroxye01 says:

Again Thank You rich, this is the video I was looking for , prior replacing the timming chain on saturn sl 1998. Only thing I find confusing is the proper alignment of the lower timming sprocket ( crankshaft ) should notch at 12 o’clock or 3 o’clock ?

wangbungal says:

ok,anyway you could make a video for fords in the future?

richpin06a says:

I did a coolant system flush with dishwasher detergent.

wangbungal says:

what do you mean by flushing the oil out and using a dishwasher detergent? is this the same for a ford explorer sohc 4.0? do you think the explorer can be done as well without removing the engine?

richpin06a says:

I remove the manifold from the head because of all the stuff you have to remove to let the head come off with the intake still on.The short answer is i like to remove it.

Carmen Jennings says:

working on a 93 saturn with a 1.9 dohc intake come out with head or is it better to leave it in car like you do with sohc ?

richpin06a says:

Two revolutions of the crankshaft gear.

Seth Jones says:

two revolutions as in the chain moving all the way around two times??

richpin06a says:

Do the timing marks line up after you have rotated the engine two revolutions.

Seth Jones says:

I didn’t wire the chain down. When I put the chain back on, with the timing marks on the crank shaft lining up, I didn’t know how to line up the other timing marks I thought that I needed to line up the mark on the sprocket with the colored link but whenever I turn the crank shaft the colored links never line up again. Is that right??

vbpeepee says:

Totally possible to do, even with the engine in the car. I pulled the head, timing cover, oil pan, windage pan, pistons/rods, and replaced the pistons, rings, rod bearings, timing chain, head gasket, etc with the block still in the car. Complete rebuild kit was only about $400 on ebay.

grande2353 says:

The reason It’s I want to keep the same engine and I want to learn how to due I hope u can help me and tell me some ideas I try to due by my self this car have some sentimental value so I wanna keep may be u can tell me step by step and thanks

richpin06a says:

Yes it is a lot of work maybe finding a low mileage engine would be a better choice.

grande2353 says:

So definely need to change of just of rings or pistons to, and is hard to change any idea Is welcome and thanks to response so fast I hope u can help me

richpin06a says:

Most S-series with a fair amount of millage will leak oil through the piston rings.

grande2353 says:

I had saturn sl 1997 had 312534k an is burning to much oil I had to put 1/4 every 3 weeks or every month u think is de piston rings

richpin06a says:

I think if you replace the water pump and do a tune up you should be fine.
Important Update: Jan 1 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be solely for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.
