A leak down test should be able to narrow down the problem.

Debra Jackson says:

Hello, Rich
Debra Jackson: I have an 1997 Saturn SC 1, my coolant is mixing with oil with a milk like substances forming in the cooling container. I don’t know to get it flush first, or check the themostrat or check head. Need help.

Michael Sackstein says:

It seems that nowadays since saturns are extinct that most people will just junk the car when a major repair like this is needed.

Gabriel Velazquez says:

Of bad coils, failed upper mounts/studs, failed coolant temp sensors and connectors, failed belt tensioner a, oh and on L’s failed BCMs! Damn those BCMs

Gabriel Velazquez says:

Some times your past revisits you. My first gig in the industry was at Saturn from 2001-2003. Then I moved on and been specializing on European cars since. My gf’s sister just get her car a 2001 SL vin 8 with. Blown head gasket due to failed pump. Thought these cars were behind me, thanks for the vid brought back memories…

richpin06a says:

I do not work on them that much but i will see.

8017355 says:

NOT GIVING IN THAT EASY THEY DON’T MAKE THIs car any more and I have learnt alot fro you in the short time I have watched your video’s Good Teacher Gonna try to rebuild my engine and can I get a “Canadian model” engine? here is a good place to get parts in canada for any one who want to salvage there saturn Good Machine For real

8017355 says:

I was wondering how to do this job on a SL2 Saturn 1996 DOHC 1.9 Automatic I Imported it from the states I was wondering if you can do one for the sunroof my car starts the heater gage goes to the half way mark but then the other day I went to the store and I had to Give it gas to start it and now I have to leave my car on. I know it is the head gasket for sure it starts the first time but the second time I try it does not start Thank you for making theses video’s for saturns 🙂 U da MAn!!!!

Dpettis71 says:

Hey rich, do you have experience with small engines.i.e lawn mower engines. If so can you make a video , on making adjustments to idle ,throttle etc.. Thank you rich

inlinesicks says:

Unfortunately I don’t have a leak down tester. But another odd thing was that the spark plug wells on cylinders 1 and 2 were completely full of oil and also were the ones with very low compression, I wonder if it has any correlation or just a weird coincidence. Also for the brief time I drove it on 2 cylinders it had what sounded like detonation during acceleration.

richpin06a says:

Good question, can you do a leak down test and confirm were the lost is.

inlinesicks says:

I have a 92 sl2 with an odd compression problem, it was running perfectly fine until I stopped at a red light and it started missing really bad. I got home and looked into it and cylinders 1-2 have 30psi and 3-4 have 125psi. It wasn’t overheating and the timing looks fine. The fluids aren’t mixed at all and were all full and clean. When I took a wet compression test I got 125psi on 1-2 and 250psi on 3-4. That would seem to indicate pistons/rings but why would that just happen all of a sudden?

richpin06a says:

All s-series were made in Spring Hill,TN

James Hudson says:

no saturn was made in the US therefore i would think it would not have metric

monstercrackhead says:

awesome tutorial man,thanks.

rennoc58 says:

He sometimes sounds like Peter Griffin from family guy lol

richpin06a says:

I would do a leak down test to see how bad it is.

MrAtomtj1 says:

HI I HAVE SATURN 1999 SL1 WHIT 170K MILES
WHET I CHECK COOLET A SEE
oil in the water container is colored black lead
tecture is like the milkshake
the car does not overheat and no smoke
car is running fine at this moment
i read on the Internet that may be a crack in the head
is there any way to fix this without changing the head?
sorry for my English

richpin06a says:

It is similar.

Dude13450 says:

Hey, I have a 96 SL2, and was wondering if it is relatively the same process to remove the DOHC head.

12thpanzerHJ says:

my compressor was a PITA to get out. Still dont have it fully out, but for u 99′ saturn Sl owners, ur gonna have fdun with this one.

vicarod says:

I will separate them and leave the intake in the car. Thanks Rich!

richpin06a says:

I thought it was easier the way i did it here but leaving the head on is not to bad ether.

vicarod says:

Sorry…or should I remove manifold and push it aft against firewall and then remove head? Thanks.

vicarod says:

Hey Rich. I burned a valve and I am pulling the head with the block in the vehicle. It is a twin cam. What do you feel is easier: pull head with iIntake manifold on head, or remove the manifold and push it aft against firewall and then py

romamsanchez says:

Nice video I have a 1997 Saturn sl2 with head gasket problem
I did everything like in the video shows and so far so good no problem get

HatePigCops says:

checking compression/etc tomorrow. God I hope its not the head gasket

hondamagnaperformanc says:

what are you trying to do jack the whole car up with the oil pan? You pull the jack head off or throw a piece of plywood on top of the head if your so worried about getting a dent in your oil pan.

richpin06a says:

Most jacks have a metal head and the oil pan is light metal so we use wood because it will not deform the pan.

hondamagnaperformanc says:

i just support the engine with the jack until i swap it, why use the wood?

richpin06a says:

I would highly recommend you replace the valve covers gaskets on your sc2 because of the fact that if the old ones do not seal you could get oil down the spark plug wells.

WCephei77HD says:

Hi there, could you please tell me something?…. If I go to replace the timing chain do I need to replace new gasket on the top engine cover? My car is a saturn sc2 1999

richpin06a says:

On the S-series they are quite different.

Henry Aragon says:

Is the crank pulley the same s the power steering pulley?

richpin06a says:

One hose goes to the evap purge solenoid i am not sure about the other it could be the egr if you have 95 or earlier.
Important Update: Jan 1 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be solely for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.

Carol Kirk says:

Omar Chisolm says:

@richpin06a. i sure will. i thought bout swappin tht sensor the 1st time but wasnt convinced it was transmission related. specially after replacing both the speed sensors on the tranny. but. i drove it on the high way last nite and my lady noticed the differ. She asked ” NOW WHAT U DO?” “FEELS LIKE ITS GOIN FASTER” lol

richpin06a says:

Cross your fingers.

Omar Chisolm says:

@richpin06a i swapped it with the ol brass engine temp sensor tht i replaced but kept aftyer cleaning it off and now the shifts arent to harm, i dont hear much of that ROARING sound comin from tranny on the driver side anymore, and the pikk up is way better than b 4. oh and i replaced the f filter. =D. my car now has 200 on the dash.lets see what happens.

Omar Chisolm says:

@rich thanks alot. now that im use to these repairs. it dont look like a job i cant do. oh and i found the problem i was cryin to u about the hesitating issuse i was having with the pick up. i found that the coolant temp sensor for the tranny had the rubber sensor in there.

richpin06a says:

Yes it is the same block. The automatic transmissions are different as is the computer to make the transmission work.

Omar Chisolm says:

@richpin06a. hey say if i wanted to swap the sohc to the dohc. all i need to do is swap the head and the chain because they use the same block? and do they use the same tranny? Just n case i wanaa bust this out nxt summer =D

richpin06a says:

I am glad you like them.

michael burt says:

Ur vids helped me alot and learn alot from u. Thanks 🙂
