I am trying to build a bike generator with this alternator. Does the pulley
spin clockwise or counterclockwise? Is this alternator self exciting or
does it need voltage from the battery to initially energize the field?

You should clean the split ring contact with no.400 emery cloth. You should
spin the rotor when you clean it to avoid flat spotting it. This is from
the Delco service manual.
