The Great Fuel Debate

The Great Fuel Debate

Your SAAB’s turbo-powered engine can live with low-octane fuel, but should it? What’s the risk of saving money by pumping regular vs. premium? Engine tuner Mike Digiorgio joins hosts Carl Levine and Lee Kelso to explain why he says the answer is clear.

I have owned my low pressure turbo for 5 years and always fill with 89. Just paid 3.949 at BP

Just a comment on Rob Reider, the “TV spokesperson” talking about detonation. While I didn’t know him back in his television days, it wouldn’t surprise me if he wrote the script. He is a multitalented individual, currently primarily involved in air show announcing and everything flying (including commuting around the country in his amateur built Vans RV-7A). I immediately recognized his voice and looked at the screen. Kind of fun to see a younger version of the man I know.

93 for my 9-3

About 5 years ago I started exclusively using premium in my ‘92. Not sure why I hadn’t started earlier.

But convenient (or rather inconvenient) story similar to the ignition lock. I was literally 2 blocks (as the crow flies) from home. Stopped in front of a neighborhood coffee shop on my way to an outing. Got me and the pup back into the vert, and about to start when the shifter folded over at the base. Smooth like warm taffy. This had been right across the street from where my mechanic had his shop about a year before (he got bought out as the building was being renovated into high-end apartments/shops.)

Had he still been there, an easy push into his shop. Could have limped her home but for the hills in the neighborhood…. Ended up with a tow, but an easy repair.

Then there’s the rubber shift linkage…

Nothing but 93 for my SAABs.

K Edwards says:

Being cheap is expensive! Always premium in my Saabs

Daryl Joseph says:

Thank you gentlemen for having this conversation. I'm in Southeastern Massachusetts. I only ever put premium in my 2 9-5 Aero Wagons. I get it at one place for $3.69 a gallon and it's good fuel. Everywhere else its $3.99 a gallon at best. Would never run anything else but premium.
