Fantastic video. I had bought a complete aerial and was looking for help when I came across this one. I ordered the mast only and fitted it really easily. Many thanks. It took mine a while to settle the last few inches but now it’s perfect.
Looks good but how on earth do you get the old one out? Mine rotates but there is no way it will pull out as simply as shown in your clip. Help…..
Note to self, never let your mother borrow your car, she will park under low trees and remove your antenna -_-
It’s actually dead simple. You just need to get a sharp craft knife and carefully taper the end of the aerial. Just trim a half inch sliver off the end of the flat side (i.e. not the toothed side) of the plastic cord and it should feed right in with no problem.

Thanks for the reply. In the end I had to dismantle the assembly anyway as the sleeve was stuck in the main tube and the only way to get it out was to push the old aerial back the other way an gently tap it to get it out. So as it was in bits anyway, I took the opportunity to thread the cable onto the gears whilst it was disassembled and then pop the new aerial through the bodywork. Longwinded but worked. Great vid by the way – hopefully it’ll be easier for everyone else 😉
In all honesty it took about 3 or 4 goes – I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble & can’t offer any further words of wisdom other than to keep trying! Maybe try the helpful people at either uksaabs or saabscene?

Ok – I’ve got to ask. How many attempts did it take you guys to actually thread the cord into the motor? I kid you not I managed to get it after three goes but decided to take it out and try again as the aerial had’t fully retracted. Since then I must have made a 100 plus attempts and simply cannot get it to ‘bite’ and pull through. Any tips?

Doesnt matter now i skinned the f**ker , bit of a potch but i got there , thanks anyway for the video .
Can you please help . everything was going fine up until “ease out lower section from car body”. At this point the snapped bit within the body just wont budge i’ve tried easing , coaxing and brute force but nothing seems to work , do you know what is holding it in as i really dont know , if you have any advice i’d be most grateful .
Oh and i dont know about reversing into bushes but never be impatient at the petrol station and fill up off the pump on the wrong side .
I’m waiting for my replacement aeriel (saab 9 3 also) to come back and thought i’d try and search for some advice , i hope it goes as quickly and easily as you made it look .

Good video, showed me where I was going wrong.
In my case, the aerial had be snapped off at the base (like in the video) for this method to work as unscrewing the nut pulls the inner sleeve out (mine wouldn’t come out otherwise as it has barbs and was stuck).
If you’re having trouble, and the mast has only bent half way try bending it as the base before starting at the beginning.
It’s an optical illusion – similar to the way in which car wheels or airplane propellers appear to be going backwards at certain speeds. The cable is in fact being ejected out of the bodywork, but I do agree with you in that it does appear to be snaking back in…
i know this will sound stupid, but when the old cable is drawn back down, where does it go, where is it ejected? at first i thought it was pulled out, but it looks like it is drawn back into the bodywork. Cheers.

thanks for posting, i too have the saab 9-3 and found that its not as easy as it looks! got it in the end with the help of my bro. 🙂 we ended up stripping the old 1 down to replace the antenna.
