Turns out… that it was also the evaporator – which needed to be replaced.

So, if i just hover on your channel long enough, you’ll get to all the
problems I have been having my Saab 9-3 2000 SE! I just had to learn how to
replace a headlight bulb, which was a major undertaking for me. My AC has
never worked, even though I had it changed once. What I need to determine,
before even looking for leaks, is to learn how to test each of the AC
individual parts. How do I know if my compressor, condensor or clutch is
working. All with my repair budget of $0.99. 😉

Good to know I’m not the only one. It’s at the shop as we speak…. Very
cool that you can have a friend fix it. Best of luck!

Lawyerdork says:

How did it go? Is the car back? Is it fixed? Price? I’d like to know.
Hopefully my mate will fix my evaporator this weekend.

Lawyerdork says:

I have the same problem with my SAAB. My evaporator is leaking. The
previous owner replaced it 5 years ago, but now it’s broken again. Luckily
I have a friend that works for SAAB who will fix it for me. The one
adantage of living in Sweden.

tgsavel says:

So I brought my SAAB to S&J Automotive in Atlanta, and they found the leak.
It was actually in one of the hoses, not in the compressor, condenser, or
the evaporator. In the diagram I showed it was part #8. They replaced the
part…and so far, all seems well. Thank you S&J!!

tgsavel says:

With the evaporator replaced…..and the fan resistor
replaced…..finally…. is working perfectly. Because I didn’t buy a Saab
evaporator – it was around $250 for the part and about $400 for the labor.
Good luck with your evaporator. I did learn that if you use a non-Saab
evaporator, installation is much more difficult.

John Smelcer says:

How much did it cost to have the hose replaced?

tgsavel says:

Just hit 100k. Agree with your idea.. Luckily, I found some forums that are
already out there…..been so helpful. Thanks for watching the video.

tgsavel says:

My sense is that if you hear that sound when the compressor kicks
in….It’s probably the compressor. Other than the evaporator (hidden deep
inside the car)…. if you have a leak…and you use the UV dye… you’ll
be able to see the site of the leak. My 2 cents is that it is the
compressor. I’m sure you already know about them but thesaabsitedotcom has
some great advice- has been priceless for me. Good luck… let me know what
happens. Thanks!

How many miles you got on yours?

shmnch says:

I am the Mom to an ’00 9-3 SE (but I’ve had it since birth) 166,012 mi. The
A/C just went out. 4 cans of r134 and still won’t hold, I’m right where you
were 3 months ago – in Dallas it’s unbearable right now! My question is:
did you hear a clanging (like ceramic plates jiggling together) whenever
you filled with refrigerant and the compressor engaged? Mine makes that
sound, but only when it’s got freon in it…Mechanic says immediately then
the next step is to replace compressor. How to check?

shmnch says:

P.S. tgsavel, how many miles is on it? I think we should start an Saab
“Support” Club just for ’00 9-3 SE owners and the repairs we need, it might
be helpful! 😉 Thanks!
