PORSCHE PCM REBOOTING ISSUE FIX AND FINALLY A WHY IT HAPPENS!

#porschemacan #porsche #porschepcm #PCMISSUEFIX

HOW TO FIX THE PORSCHE PCM 3.1 REBOOT ISSUE that is happening across a lot of Porsche Macan, Cayenne, Cayman, Boxter. 911 and Panamera from about 2010-2016.

This is a large issue affecting multiple drivers across the full line of Porsche’s and after intensive research among multiple forums, chatting with multiple owners online and reading up on multiple user troubleshooting attempts i was able to come up with a final conclusion as to why this is happening and how to fix it. It is Basically heat related, some say that it is also related to a XM Update but I have seen examples with radios who didn’t use XM. Now wether it was a faulty xm update, heat related or just an OS needing to be reset. The Drives inside the PCM are becoming corrupt. a Simple HAND OVER Procedure and Soft reset to Clear the Cache can fix it but if left alone and you let the drive continue to crash, you may have to replace the PCM Unit (The Expensive Route) or clone the hard drive to a new one and replace it yourself (The DIY Route)

Press and hold the INFO button for approximately 10 seconds until the PCM reboots.
Press the CAR button.
Press the OPTION button or touch the tab of the same name in the header.
Select SET PCM system. Reset PCM.
Select “Vehicle handover” This resets all settings to predefined values and deletes your personal settings and data (including addresses, destinations, radio stations, phone numbers, as well as the recordings in the Sport display).
Confirm the relevant prompt by selecting “Yes”.

(If this doesn’t fix it) You may need to replace the hard drive but you will need to clone primarily the BOOT SECTOR and PCM OS (QNX) and any info into the new drive by way of using a cloning software. (DO NOT TRANSFER PERSONAL FILES, MUSIC, ETC – RESET DRIVE FIRST WITHIN PCM on STEP 2 before removing drive from PCM to clone it)

CLONING YOUR PCM DRIVE:
If you attempt to clone the drive yourself: You Must first buy a new SATA Drive – PNY CS900 120GB 2.5 inch SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) – (SSD7CS900-120-RB) https://amzn.to/2Bgr7TS or Kingston 120GB A400 SATA https://amzn.to/3hDC2YB

– Use a PC with SATA Drive capabilities
– Use Clonezilla on a bootable USB drive https://clonezilla.org/
– Remove PCM fuse (It’s in the rear Fuse Box)
– Remove your hard drive from your PCM
– The hard drive is at the top of the PCM. (T8 screws)
– Unplug the ribbon connector from the back of the drive, NOT from the PCM end.
– Once removed attach the drive you just removed and the new drive to your PC
– Change the boot order on PC to boot from USB using your Clonezilla bootable USB drive and then start Clonezilla
Run Clonezilla, chose to clone from device to device, select the source drive (PCM) and the destination (new SSD SATA DRIVE)
– Once is completed. Re-Insert the fuse and instal the drive and test the PCM before putting everything back together.

(If Cloning your PCM Drive is above your head, please take the drives to Geek Squad or a PC Tech and have them clone the drives for you but make sure you RESET AND DELETE all your content first as you are not trying to copy any possible corrupted data or cluster to the new drive as this is the issue to begin with)

Here is a pretty extensive resource also for this diy if you want to tackle it yourself

Crypto 100 says:

Hey, I have this issue with a pcm 3.0. but it now doesnt even turn on. Any ideas?

Artisan Concrete says:

Mine will consistantly reboot only once the first initial time I hard accelerate the tiptronic into overdrive (or whatever the hell you call it) and thats the only time it happens per trip. It doesn't matter how long once I park and switch the ignition off, until my next trip (ie, immediately or 2 weeks) as soon as I hard accelerate, the PCM will reboot that first time and only that time for that particular trip. I can drag race all night and it won't reboot a 2nd time unless I park and shut it off and start it back up again. Hows that for some shit? God damn annoying.

Hi there I have Same car as some of u Macan s 2016 doing same think just rebooting after 5-10min is that hard drive in radio located or where & does it fix the navigation system to is keep saying is loading thx for ur help guys

Michael Langecker says:

Great video, will help many users!!! Thx…. Let me add a reason for that failure types: Low Battery levels!!!
When you start the engine, it consumes lots of energy! When the PCM system is still booting, it happens, that it doesn't get enough energy to finish that process and shutting of a system while it's booting is always a bad idea (!)
The Fix is:

1) If you use your car just seldome (1x p. week), charge the battery with a smart charger, which keepsthe battery at a high level (esp. in wintertime !)
2) When you start your Porsche, wait, until the PCM has booted completely, before you start the engine (You shouls see zthe Navi maps!)

Glenn Hand says:

I was looking into the Tesla plug and play 10.3 inch stereo that fits in Macan S It is $1200 so it’s a bit pricey and then I have to have someone install it Not sure if you look into it it’s on YouTube supposedly you install it and all factory settings work as well as Apple CarPlay and rear camera want to know your advice if I should get it or keep the original PCM

Glenn Hand says:

I’m picking up my 2016 Macan S on Monday exact same car as you Sapphire blue do you have a Bose system in yours like mine ?

Fahim Ghaus says:

Thanks for the video.
The reset didn’t help my Macan’s PCM, I’m thinking of replacing the hard drive which is a Toshiba and extremely rare in London. If someone can recommend all the hardwares that I need I’d be grateful.
The recommendation links you shared aren’t available in the UK.
Thanks.

lisander salihu says:

I did the exact same thing but it’s still rebooting the system every 3-5 min. I dont want to spend any more money on this car it’s driving me crazy. Whats the next step i can take. My Systemversion is V4.76 is there maybe a softwareupdate available that i don’t know of? Pls could someone explain, I really need help.

spencer mains says:

Saul – really helpful. I just received delivery of a 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder – It was shipped to me from Arizona to northern California during probably the hottest time of the year for both states…110 + The car was delivered in a cover semi with I think three or four other cars. Upon driving it the day it arrived, I noticed maps and navigation was not working. Then, later in the drive the PCM rebooted. I didn't think about it too much. But, then the frequency of reboots increased to about every 4 minutes. The Spyder had just gone out of warranty about three weeks prior to delivery. I contacted the owner (independent high end dealership – not a Porsche dealership) and he told me he would never send any of his cars to buyers with a problem and he had driven it 900 miles and this was not happening to him. I actually trust him at his word. He is working with me to a degree, but I don't think he is going to compensate for this. I contacted PCNA and put in a claim (case) and they investigated. They got back to me and said they cannot replace because it is out of warranty. Annoying and not really fair given the car just went out of warranty and that the PCM issue looks to be really common now.

Anyway, enough about my sob story. I am interested in knowing if any of the recommended hard drives/fix solutions you described (btw, you seem to be the only one who has figured out how to do this and have documented it). I suspect I will end up doing this myself as I am unwilling to spend $5K to get one. Plus, they are on backorder – another sign there is a problem with these.

Hope you can be of help to me on this one. The car is incredible except for this part. It was hugely disappointing to get this car with it not 100% operational. First world problem for sure, but still…

Help please
My car cs 2009 have same problem

Screamingiraffe says:

Interesting take on the issue. I'm still waiting for the who unit to be replaced by Porsche, it's been 2 months and counting.. I was told that the unit is backordered and I just have to wait. For now it's a pain to watch the radio reboot every few minutes while driving. Porsche Panamera 4S – the reset 'fix' doesn't work for me and the dealer/service center have tried a few times.

Unk says:

Great video, i ordered the drive but when it arrived i noticed the connections are different from the original, 2010 panamera 4s any advice. Thanks

Mike D says:

So your hard drive is not a SSD for early models but is disc. And is why Porsche went to SSD because of the issue which means Porsche knows.

What year is your Macan
