Porsche Boxster Crankshaft Pulley Replacement | BeatTheBush

Change the crankshaft pulley in a Porsche Boxster. Do not attempt with a 12″ wrench, it’s not enough. Use this giant Tekton 24″ Torque Wrench: http://amzn.to/28X6D2p

It takes roughly 300ft-lb of force to remove the bolt so you’ll need some major leverage for this job. Get the wrench and a pulley and you’re good to go.

Why I had to replace mine? Because it was wobbling due to excessive ‘punching’ it acceleration. Seeing that it’s made of aluminium I see that you cannot down shift too rough and need to give it at least a little time to transition. Sort of like revving high and letting the clutch go, it’s hard on the engine and here you see the damage that results.

One other damage that resulted from my abuse could be the air-oil separator. I also replaced this in one of my other videos. .

Hello Engineer, that is not a timing belt Lol
I still like your video because I support all DIYers out there and I absolutely like your ethic and enthusiasm in your vids.

You don't use a torque wrench to loosen a bolt, you use a long breaker bar with a cheater bar . A torque wrench is for tightening only and use a new bolt because threads stretch. I'm a retired nuclear maintain machinist hoped that helps.

Can you do this same procedure on the 996 911 carrera 3.6l? it looks like same configuration. uses same pully as well

when store the torqe put it on back on 0 so the calibration stays !

Hi BTB. I replaced the K&N air filter with OEM and cleaned the MAF Sensor. It has solved the miss at 5200rpm and improved the top end revs 80 percent. I will change the plugs and replace the crankshaft pulley with the underdrive one I have purchased. Thanks for your advice.
Cheers

Thanks. I will replace it with the stock one to see if that is the problem. I have a new one but never installed it. Cheers

Thanks for the video man. I have noticed some vibration on my new to me 986. Gonna check the pulley out. Is it safe to turn on the engine with the cover behind the seats off? And was your roof top half way open for this job? THanks!

samin90 says:

Oh no, you're only supposed to use the torque wrench to tighten things down to whatever the torque rating is
If you use that torque wrench to undo really tight things like that drive pulley bolt or the lug bolts for your wheels, you can apparently throw the calibration for the mechanism in the wrench off and suddenly it won't click at 85 ft-lbs for something like when you're putting on your wheels but something much higher like 125 ft-lbs

You can actually get a 24 inch breaker bar to undo tight bolts for like $20: http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00VPPK0E0
And to make things even easier when undoing really stuck bolts you can put a steel pipe on the end of it and make an even longer breaker bar, something I wish I knew last year

That wobble though, I feel like I should replace my belt and see if any pulleys are wobbling
