Porsche 944 Transmission Rebuild Episode 3 – Limited Slip Differential & Bonus

Today we are taking apart Jeff’s Limited Slip Differential to verify the condition of the friction surfaces and measure everything. Russ has never taking one of these apart before so this should be fun. He’ll also show you how to correctly measure the differential for reassembly.

Thanks again for sharing this info on the 944 transaxle/diff, Russ. It's a shame your shop doesn't have 3-phase power available, I'll bet having your phase converter running all the time so the compressor can cycle normally will be annoying! Really nice compressor, BTW. It doesn't seem very loud at all considering the size.

As an engineer, I have to say it is such a pleasure to watch a master mechanic in his element. As an amateur, I would have had to mark every component and photograph it before I could take something like the lsd apart, even with the workshop manual as a reference. For you, with your experience and intuition, you can take something apart for Athe first time and totally understand it, – it is amazing to watch! BTW, take care of those thrust washers for the LSD, they are NLA from Porsche. I also ordered new bolts for the LSD, -expensive, about $12.00 each. Hey, when you are spending a couple thousand dollars for parts, what’s another hundred dollars for 8 bolts!
