How to Register a Porsche Battery After Replacement | Coding with iCarsoft | Porsche GT4

My battery in my Porsche GT4 needed to be replaced. Little did I know that there is a slightly complicated process in order to replace the battery. I was a little annoyed but with all this new technology in cars today I can understand a little bit why replacing a battery requires more steps than just slapping one in there.

After some reading, I found out that you have “code” the new battery to the car because of the way the car charges the battery and needs to know what type of battery and specs of the new battery in order to adjust its electrical settings.

At first, I was like…how am I going to do that since I live 4 hours away from a Porsche dealership? Well, I got really lucky, and I am super thankful to FLAT6MOTORSPORTS for saving my butt. They sent me over some computers to test out the “coding” process and I was more than happy to accept the help.

I got the battery which was a huge thanks to Denver of Littleton. Swapped the battery and was able to code it with the iCARSOFT CR MAX computer.

Here is the battery replacement instructions video I mentioned in my video:

I replaced the battery about a month ago on my 14 c2s for the first time,and the only thing i did was plug in the ctek to the cigarette lighter port while i moved and replaced it just to keep the system alive. So far I haven't encountered any problems at all. On my 06 cayenne s, I replaced the battery even without using any outside power sourse to maintain the car memory and it had no problems at all.

Hello very good video very interesting, can you help me I would like to ask you a question: how can we enter a reference of a used battery or there is nothing written on the battery and how to do it? And if I buy a new varta battery, there are not always his numbers how to do it, thank you cordially. Audi q7

Are you sure you do not have an AGM battery in that 2016 GT4? My 2015 991.1 GTS came factory equipped with a BANNER AGM as the standard battery. Looking at the video, I see a battery vent hose on both the old and new battery, so that would make it a Flooded Lead Acid battery aka WET. Strange, why would Porsche install an AGM in mine and not in yours? Unless of course the old and new battery were not originally installed by Porsche at the factory. I noted the one you removed was an Exide battery likely made in the US and sold by the VW group. There is a guy that knows how to remove battery terminials in the correct order – remove the negative first and install it last to prevent shorts.

I am glad that your scanner is working and hope you don't need their customer support, it is the worst customer service EVER. Have you tried contacting their ONE MAN Customer Support SHOW in the US? He lables his emails "Mr. Barnett", he respnds once and then stops, does not read the emails but spits out one email with general instructions. The SD Card on my Icarsoft MBII was corrupted, I spent a week sending emails to this Barnett character and no help whatsoever. I am throwing this piece of junk and getting something more reliable. Bad mistake buying this product.

These instructions are easy to follow.

Thanks again for the video. Just followed the video and everything worked great

@meseahunt says:

what if we do not replace w/a porsche batt? what info do we input?? if the new batt has the same specs can we just duplicate the old batt numbers???

@sunshinebracha says:

HI..ia this feature also on iCarsoft – POR V2.0

?can I register baterry with this device too?

@johnkhobson says:

I used iCarsoft 2.0 for Porsche. Be aware input is not touchscreen. Also, it rejected my 14 character scanner number until I prepended a 0 (zero). Seems to want 15.

@ForexTradingUG says:

Hi there, I recently got a CR MAX BT, but it keeps losing older vehicles diagnosis capability whenever I update. How can I get back those older software's?
Tried reaching support via email, but they just won't get back to me on this, but do respond to other issues.

@youuu4307 says:

If you don't register the new battery does the engine start ?

@johnc1486 says:

I have a 2014 991.
bought new, still original battery.
I just saw a video where they put the car on a porsche battery tender before performing the work, in order to retain the memory.  (Makes total sense to me)
In that particular case they installed a physically larger battery.
They did not re-code the car.
I just purchased the iCarsoft tool for resetting my oil service reminder light and now will use soon the battery code function on that device.

1.In your opinion is is ok to put the tender on the car for memory retention? .
2.Always re-code the car at battery replacement?

In you video only part that can get confusing is getting the correct data off the battery.

Otherwise thanks.

@number6990 says:

So I thought the OEM was an AGM battery? Also, what do you put in for the numbers if you buy an aftermarket battery?

@a.c.e.7568 says:

4:59 Battery Part Number. From what I have found out, the Battery Part Number has 11 digits. There are so many batteries that have the "base" 000 915 105 number; its the last two characters DG, DL, etc that determine the battery capacity. A DG has a capacity of 72 Ah and a DL has a capacity of 110 Ah. And if you do not enter spaces, something like a 000915105CF should fit. I have not tried this yet. What iCarsoft really needs is an iCarsoft Forum so we can clarify issues and problems.

@a.c.e.7568 says:

Strange, I just tried to register a battery on a 2011 Cayenne-92A and the Battery Serial Number window was limited to 10 alpha-numeric characters instead of the 15 that is required (14 alpha-numeric characters plus a space).

@schleutker says:

Would I have to do this if I remove my current….good battery…..to put it on a battery maintainer while the car is off site over the winter in it's trailer and then put it back in the spring?

@TheKupka says:

I just bought last week.

I cant set up an email account it keeps giving me an error message of wrong username/password but i know 100% it is correct. And it wont allow me email the pdf reports until the email issue is fixed. How can this be resolved?
Thank you

@veryberry- says:

What would happen if you got a new non-OEM battery that doesn't have the serial/part numbers? I'm wondering if these are just 'information' type fields and the only 'relevant' data for the programming are the wet/agm/lithium and capacity values.
