How to install Oil Return Tubes on a Porsche 911 Projekt Airkult Episode 17

In this video, I will show you how to install collapsible oil return tubes on an aircooled Porsche 911 engine. These oil return tubes often leak oil onto your exhaust and creating stink/smoke.

Original style oil drain return tubes are captured between the cam tower and the case, but these collapsible ones are designed to be installed without taking off the heads/cam towers, using some concentric tubes, O rings, and a snap ring. I’ve never installed these before, so I’m learning as I go. I read about two methods/tips/tricks to install these, using a 30mm open ended wrench, and a pair of snap ring pliers with a hose clamp.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to put the larger tube towards the case, and the smaller tube toward the valve cover. This will prevent oil from sitting and collecting on the O ring and possibly leaking. I’ve also coated all the O rings with dielectric grease/silicone grease to help lubricate them, and make them more impervious to oil.

I am using Laso brand collapsible oil return tubes, purchased on Pelican parts, link here:

Join me as I stumble along rebuilding the drivetrain of my 77 Porsche 911S. To be honest, I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve never owned an aircooled car before this one, there’s a huge learning curve, and I’ve been avoiding this since I bought the car years ago. I can’t afford to pay 911 prices on things, so I’ll be doing as much of the work myself as possible.

Thanks for watching and please share any thoughts or comments you have! Stay safe and happy wrenching, cheers!

Awesome video! This helped me a lot. The hardest part of the job was actually getting the new snap ring installed. It seems like the supplied snap ring is simply too small for the tube which makes installation tricky (and dangerous). You can go to NAPA and they will give you one that is slightly larger. Also, I found that the rectangular tip of a large metal file worked a bit easier (and faster) than a screwdriver tip or my snap ring pliers to push the tubes outward. Just thought I would share as it may be a little easier for someone working under the car!

Awesome Video

I just looked at my tubes, and weirdly enough, they are one piece – did you encounter that in any of your research? I haven't seen anything about these types, so I'm guessing they may be after-aftermarket type things. Thanks.

Love the videos. Do you know if the oil return tubes can be done with engine on the car? I have a 69 911S that I think is leaking at the tubes. I'm not in a position to pull the engine to do the tubes so hopefully I can do it in the car. Also, is there anything else that runs in the tubes, I seem to think there's push rods in there. Thanks again.

Nick de la torre says:

what's the difference between the two piece return lines you installed and the single piece lines??

Really enjoy your vids! There are very few out there that chronicle how to do something like this for those of us without a lot of mechanical experience. Just bought a 79 SC and i rely on stuff like this. Please post videos on all of your repairs. I'm looking to replace all of the oil lines and fuel lines as well as suspension and brakes in the next year or so. If you plan on any of these projects please tape it. Keep up the good work and thanks again!
