Early 2000 Volvo's last longer than anything in Michigan, where road salt eats most vehicles in 15 years, I have a 2001 V70T5, and a 2001 XC70, both are rust free, except a few spots .
Meanwhile, Audi's and VWs from the 2010s are all turning into rust buckets now. Compared with BMWs which for some reason from 2012 onwards just don't seem to rust at all.
I mean, today cars are fully galvanised as well but it doesn't mean corrosion can't get in there despite it. There are different ways to galvanise, at different thicknesses & different temperatures of application. Mazdas are also fully galvanised, but the protection is very just.
It is said, that during the 1980s Rover group part of British Leyland developed a steel that was as cheap and easy to press as steel and as corrosion resistant as stainless. The formula was buried as management were fearful of people not needing to buy new cars.

It always beat me how Porsches would rust like hell after just a few years while cheap crappy Beetles, which were built to the same concept, lasted decades with hardly any rust.
That said, VW wouldn't be around any more today if it hadn't been for Piëch taking over. He was a no nonsense CEO, didn't tolerate resistance against new technology. If it worked he wanted it in his cars. But his aluminium idea was a bit off. It's well known these days in the industry that aluminium doesn't necessarily make lighter cars and isn't worth the high costs.
What the fuck are you talking about?! The only cars that rust more are those of VW family!
Where I live in Scotland it's common to see 8 year old Audi's and Golf's rusted to scrap.
Kia's are 100× better at surviving corrosion.
My 2001 Passat B5.5 and 2005 Audi A4 B7 Quattro beg to differ. There was apparently a problem with the galvanization process caused by left-over sandblasting dust, which resulted in zinc bubbles under the paint. Somewhat annoying on visible surface, but more serious on the underside where rocks and sand bombard the frail paint away, revealing the sacrificial layer of zinc. Read on if you own these cars and want to know what might be ahead.
Passat seems to have a pretty good underbody coating, but the outside was full of these bubbles until I dealt with them (sand, primer, paint). It rusts elsewhere around the trunk area and underneath door moldings, generally where there's a sharp edge. Doors have these little guide holes for the moldings, notorious rusting spots in cars.
A4Q, on the other hand, doesn't have any rust on the outside, excluding front wheel arches (freaking stupid design, they gather sand on the inside "shelf" like nobody's business: after fixing or if good, put grease in them), trunk and door bottom edges (probably the glued seams opening). The real kicker is the underbody, specifically the rear around the subframe. I ended up removing it and the fuel tank to deal with the rust. Everywhere I looked, there was either rust or zinc bubbles, even in places covered by the massive fuel tank or wheel arch liners. Had the car taken weekly dips in seawater or what? I practically chiseled the rust slabs off and wire brushed it like no tomorrow, but to my surprise, there was only one small spot needing welding. I can only hope the phosphoric acid did it's job and will keep the rust at bay under the fresh paint and body coating.
I also did the same to the rear subframe, hitting the rust off with a pointy hammer. I weighed the stuff I removed and swept off the floor at 1 kg. Luckily the frame was intact enough to warrant going without welding. I did the usual acid+paint+bodycoat on the subframe, too, as well as total bushing overhaul, but here's another tip: I put old ATF inside the subframe after the acid and surface paint, before cavity wax. It should seep into whatever holes there are left and impregnate them. It's a bit of a running experiment, as I did the same to my Honda's rusted-out door and trunk bottom seams. Let me know if it is futile, or better yet, it actually works.
Okay, long rant, but I'll save the best for last. You know why I began working the A4 rear end before it morphed into this months-long quest at the mercy of weather, the car being outside? To change the springs!
Thats why I cant bring myself to agree what the W124 is the best car out there. To me the C3 and C4 alonside the B3 and B4 gen will always be the best all around engineered cars. Saab 9000 gets honorable mention.
Aluminum is susceptible to fatigue more than steel, probably won't fare as well in an accident and is tricky to repair.

Galvanized metal roof sheets were in use from 1829 which is 150 years before Porsche and Audi started galvanizing their steel car bodies.
may i ask what do you think of the current state of Audi, is it gonna be fine, i think id buy the new generations of cars, i bought a used leased 2023 Q5, first Audi for me, and im very very pleased as i expected the car was, im engineering student i admire what has Audi been doing, i just want the brand to survive these times and keep to their roots

Mega overstatement that Vag solved corrosion. Have passat B5 with galvanized body like you mentioned, fully eusted afrer just 25 years. Same goes with new cars, often I see 10 year old audi with rust problems. Unless body is full aluminium, you cannot guarantee full rust protection. I would like to see a remark like this in you future videos, since you tend to oversimplify the matter and over exaggerate certain technologies.

It would be best for humanity to put a stop to patented technology. If you can make it better why let someone’s claim on the idea stop you. Limiting humanity so you can be greedy and block the rest from progression.
