Usually you’ll hear it make a screeching noise when you try to crank the car over if it needs shims. You could try to put one in and see if it helps at all. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
how do you know when to use shims??? ive replaced the starter twice now, now i’m thinkinng the 1st starter was still good it didnt come with any shims but started the chevy cavalier fine but i replaced it cos one day the car wouldnt start but then discovered it was a bottom wire all along. now with the 2nd starter it came with shims
which i didnt use and the chevy sounds like it rubs now and then, should i have used the shims???
Went to pull starter out, swore it was shot. Got to looking at the connections leading to battery and they were very dirty. Cleaned them with wire brush and gun solvent and car turned over in one turn. 😉
Hopefully this helps! Thanks for the video!
I attempted to get my old starter off on my lunchbreak as it went out at work. I got as far as removing the wires and that was about it. Great vid, I see now that I was slightly off in my assumption of ease. I’ll definitely have to check you out on parts as I also have a mid eighties fox Mustang that I work on. Sorry for being long winded. Once again, great vid.
As long as the wires you remove off the old one go onto the new one in the same location, you will be fine.
hey im only showing four wires a red battery, white, a small red and a medium black wire. its a 2.2 could there be a difference?
Thanks for stopping by Joe. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Replaced my engine and forgot where some of the wires went. This video bailed me out! Thanks 1Aauto!
Awesome!
You’re welcome. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
i fixed it, it was the fuse it wasnt blown it had brownish black corrosion on them so i replaced and it started… thanks for the advice love the videos fix alot on my car thanks to you keep them coming
There might be an issue with the ignition switch. GM vehicles normally have an alarm built into the key tubler/igntion switch
i did this for 24 hours and still get the THEFT SYSTEM light still on… what else could it be? any help is appreciated thx you
You may want to check the wiring to see if everything’s connected correctly. You could also try to take both cables off of the batter for a couple of hours to see if this helps to clear and codes out of the system.
i have a quick question.. i replaced my starter on my 97 cavalier and when i went to start the car the THEFT SYSTEM light came on so i did the passlock relearn like literally 20 times and still no start what could be the issue? #great videos
great video, clear and easy!
lil late buddy but thanks for the reply back i guess…. i got it figured out
This video will show you how everything goes back together. Hope this helps you out.
Because the z24 has the 2.4l motor, this video is for 2.2’s only.

We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows this. However it may be in a similar location as on the one shown in the video. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Where is the starter on my 96 2.4l sunfire?
@1aauto you da man!
LOl..you can rebuild the car 10X over for the cost of a new one. If they running gear and body of the car are in decent shape. There’s nothing wrong with repairing the parts that wear out over time. Thanks for watching.
mike green, it seems im always running into you on youtube. I think its time i just replaced my car…
For anyone who has the starter only accessible from the bottom such as my 2.2L with DOHC, this is the process you want to follow. The tools needed are appropriate size sockets and wrenches and an elbow socket extender. There will be one bolt right in the open on the actual starter on the bottom, the other one is in an awkward spot above it. Use the elbow socket extender the get the proper position on it. Hope this helps anyone.
The starter isn’t where you show it in this video, on my 97 cavalier z24. Pretty rockin.
