Changing MAP and MAF sensors in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 3800 Series 2 V6

In this video I replace two faulty sensors, a MAP sensor (Manifold Air Pressure) and MAF (Mass Air Flow) in a 3800 Series II (2) V6. This engine is in a 2002…

comgeek24 says:

Are the locations of the sensors the same or almost the same on the 3100 (3.1) V6?

Mio Nome says:

I later, used the actron auto scanner to check the front and rear sensors while running the engine ( view data). Based on a website explaining the right and wrong voltages for the sensors, as well an air hose trick to make it leaner, I determined that the sensors were both ok, and by default, th catalytic converter is bad or going bad.
I wish there was another cause, but who am I kidding….

Turbo231 says:

I idle the car and start unplugging stuff until it gets better or worse…that’s one way.

Turbo231 says:

I replaced sensors based on SES light codes and guessing. It appears the engine management uses a combination of MAP and MAF to find the best fuel trim and can run ok on just one sensor and runs like crap on none. Then I started with the cheapest and went from there. Currently my MAF has failed, I’m working on either cleaning or repairing it. My test was the car runs better without it then with the MAF sensor, that’s a good sign of a faulty sensor.

Mio Nome says:

Thanks for the info vid!. How did you diagnose to replace the sensors. Would this apply to P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). I have to figure out what is causing this code. Any suggestions? thanks

Turbo231 says:

SES – Service Engine Soon light showed a code that the sensor was out of range.

Hugo Gutierrez says:

how do you know both maf and map sensor are damaged? is there any way to check them out unplugged? sorry my english is very bad as you can see.

Eric Boff says:

WOW! My ’01 Grand Prix V6 was idling extremely rough and stalling. I followed this video’s instructions, bought some sensor cleaner spray at O’Reilly’s and BAM! Works like a champ. Started right up and idled perfectly. Thank you so much for this video!

Never wear jewelry (rings, watches) while doing hand work. I know it sounds distant, but you can loose fingers / limbs. I’ve seen it a couple of time is the last 10 years.

tmaq97 says:

don’t forget to check the pvc valve along with the o-rings under the map sensor!

tmaq97 says:

yes you can get a MAF at oreilys for 138.00 (with core) and its just like this video shows you, but i got the T20 security bit to take the screws out. my car ran like it wasn’t getting gas made a noise like a big faucet was turned on and would stall out and had the engine light on so i came to conclusion that it was the maf sensor when i had it running (like crap) and unplugged the connector to the maf sensor and ran normal so i knew i had to get a new one. do it yourself and save your money!

M Clem says:

Great info video… Got a question, my 2001 Monte SS cranks over, but stalls right away… It rana couple times for 3-5 seconds and was blowing a little smoke when it did. I had the Cat replaced about a month ago and my mechanic says its still good, he wants $350 for just the MAP sensor replaced, is that a bit high ? And does that sound like it could be the problem ? Can it be the MAF instead ? Thanks a ton… Any help would be great… Michael…

MrEastbeast91 says:

Okay my car is idling im guessing its the maf sensor !?

Turbo231 says:

Could be. Have to do some trouble shooting.

my car dies while driving it could it be 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix ?

Great video!!!!! You just saved me 500 bucks at the dealer.

Paul O'Neal says:

My car did the same thing. It was the idle air sensor.

Paul O'Neal says:

A bad idle air sensor would cause it not to crank.

thecheesburgler says:

They suck either way.

TheMarcar1 says:

also sounds like its suffocating for fuel or air or something, loses power, but regains at lower rpm-its a 3800 engine

Paul O'Neal says:

Autozone sells them.

Paul O'Neal says:

They are Tamper-proof torx bits…

Paul O'Neal says:

I bought mine from Autozone….

po107 code on my 97 gp runs great I just had a bad o2 in bank one, what causes this code I just replaced the map sencer I hope this is it I get back to ya soon

Turbo231 says:

I could be one of a list of things, but it could be involved, yes.

bamfan2044 says:

Would a dirty MAF cause hesitation like I have to give it a lot of gas for little RPM?

Turbo231 says:

Maybe…but probably not. Under load and near WOT, the engine just gives it all it has. Look at things that would fail if the engine was giving it all its go…such as fuel supply running low…or spark not hot enough…so fuel filter or wires perhaps.

swikil says:

@Turbo231.

I replaced the MAF last night, I also cleand the Idle sensor. It’s running well this AM, but it did have some hesitation under load going uphill. Would this be the MAP failing?

Turbo231 says:

No, these issues won’t cause a car NOT to crank. It will just keep it from running. So you have to hunt down why it’s not cranking, once you find that, then you can move on to your lack of idle problem. FYI, just because the fuel pump runs doesn’t mean its working. Get a fuel pressure gauge and be sure, there is a tap on the fuel railing.
