I was hoping for a bang or clonk when it released it but seeing the oil
dripping really was an oh shit moment. Luckily it didnt do any damage, just
topped the gearbox oil up and the cars been fine, i just need to get a
proper ball joint tool for the next time

After watching your video few days ago, today I did the same mistake even
after undoing the axle nut! I lost 75% of my oil as I was not expecting it
(15eu waste). It turns out the recommended way in all cases is just to
drain the oil or put something bellow the place where the drive shaft
enters the gearbox. But 10x for the video…it was very useful.

It’s as simple as it sounds. You fully drag the driveshaft out from the
gearbox, and in that hole is the seal. A circular seal. You simply get a
flat screwdriver, or with your finger drag out the seal. You then clean the
area and put the new seal in pressing it with a big cilinder applying
gentle pressure until it’s in. Don’t press it from side to side. It will
bend. I used the bottom of a can 😀 It was cheaper at my peugeot dealer
instead of local car parts shops.

I did this on my 307. I removed the driveshaft and put it back on with same
gearbox seal. It didn’t leak. But after some weeks i found oil on my
parking space.

Defiantly an ‘oh shit’ moment. If I did that I’d be worried I had just done
something real bad when it comes off with a bang, then seeing oil leaking.

I bought a proper balljoint splitter and it will be interesting to see how
well it works, the time i was doing this video i only wated to remove the
hub as the strut was not coming off

Its worth knowing this thanks, luckily i must have got away with it, there
is no oil in the normal parking space or garage floor off my car but i
intend to waxoyl under the car in the next couple of weeks so ill inspect
the seals. Thanks for pointing this out. Was there any difficulites
associated in changing the seals, i see a few kits on ebay it might be
worth doing it as a precaution

I bought my first car after just driving scooters for years in December,
now it is off the road for the summer while I’m back on two wheels. I need
to do the clutch and timing belt and decided to just take the engine out so
I can work on it more conveniently. Lots of manual reading and youtube
watching; hope it will be more fun then hassle.

I think the driveshaft itself needs to be in place in order for the seal to
work it didnt leak after the driveshaft was put back into the car

If you remove the driveshaft and the gearbox oil drains you must change the
driveshaft seal.

This is typical things that happens when doing it without all the special
tools from a garage. Your not the first one! Believe me! 🙂

Seriously, get a puller kit of eBay. 50-70 GBP for a universal set
including ball joint, tie rod etc… Did it the other day on my 406, ball
joints, outer tie rods (or joints), sway (stabilizer) rods, so much easier.
Also special sockets for replacement of lower ball joints is available.

It’s a VW MkIV Diesel Golf, I came across your vid while I was looking for
suspension ideas. Part of me taking mount the engine is so I can get a good
look at it and replace whatever looks a bit worn. It will be a great
opportunity for me to familiarise myself with it. I’ve never worked on a
diesel before, so it should be fun and interesting.

Bueno despues de renegar un largo tiempo y desarmando la guantera y el
frente de los controles me di cuenta que el radiador se retira sacando la

I have found a great way of avoiding all this. Procedure can be found we
one searches on the net for “Saab NG900 Front Suspension”. The essential
thing is to first remove the two bolts that hold the control arm to the
chassis. By doing this the drive shaft can be removed from the hub. Without
the hub being on our way we now can use screw-type ball joint separator.
This way we won’t damage the rubber protection of the ball joint or the
ball joint itself. Elegant, no?

Is this on a 406 you got the engine out? Well done good work. If i had the
engine out one thing i would advise is replace any engine mounts now while
they are easy to do, and check/replace any gaskets round the back of the
engine now everything is easy to get at
