Replacing the crankshaft pulley a 2002 Peugeot 406 with 117k miles. It isn’t the hardest job to do on these cars. It seems to be a common problem on HDi engi…

hi, my 406 hdi defo sounds like this, am i right in thinking if i take the aux belt off and the sound goes away then its defo the crank pulley that needs replacing.
its just that some one else seems to think i should add a thicker oil to the engine for the noise to go away, but i cant help thinking that the crank pulley is at fault and this video will help me in getting rid of the noise,
thank you
david

Thats a good method using the starter to break it loose.
But about the airgun, i bought a Clarke mains powered impact wrench and it gets crankshaft bolts off no problem.

TheGollyWally says:

brilliant thanks mate. I was giggling away to myself trying to get that damned allen key in. All I could see in my minds eye was your comment ‘ can be a bit fiddly’ My wife thinks I lost the plot 🙂

TheGollyWally says:

Ok I am just waiting for the new pulley to arrive. The fiddly bit is the allen key insertion. If you have big hands like me, its a bugger. Still doable though. The next hurdle is getting the main bolt to undo without an airgun. I ended up using a long socket wrench and wedging it against the bodywork, turned the ignition key swiftly and it came undone with ease.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

According to the haynes manual 50Nm and then angle tighten a further 62 degrees.
However i never worry about the torque, as long as its on good and tight but not so tight that it would do damage then its good

TheGollyWally says:

one last thing buddy. Is there a torque setting for the bolt?

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

I drove my car home 40 miles on a bad crankshaft pulley, on the motorway it had the same power, but i wouldnt say it would be good driving around on a bad pulley.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Thanks for the comment, and thumbs up

TheGollyWally says:

Will a bad pulley lead to power loss? We have the pulley problem (203k miles on the clock) but power just started to go at the same time buddy

TheGollyWally says:

Bloody brilliant video. Superb. The guy that gave a thumbs down must be some kind of tosser. Thanks a lot buddy. Perfectly clear and easy to understand video. Thumbs up.

KillerkoUK says:

It didnt make any unusual noise but yesterday when I started the car the crankshaft pulley just fell apart and dropped on the floor :/ so in the end I had to buy a new pulley in addition to new belt and get the wheel off anyway. I removed the other half of the pulley (had a big trouble with the nut,had to use the start method) and put a new one there, get the new belt on was a bit of a challenge too as the new belt was shorter than the old one, but adjusting the ecentric pulley sorted this. Ty!

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

If it isnt making the clattery noise then its just a case of replacing the belt, although the tensioners and idler pulley may also need to be changed if its been a long time since they last were looked at.
As for not removing the front wheel, ive always taken it off to remove the belt

KillerkoUK says:

Nice video! Can I change the auxiliary belt without taking off the front wheel? As my belt split and about 1/3 of it fell off today as I tried to get my front wheels on the pavement when trying to turn in a narrow road. As was releasing my clutch pedal to get the front wheels slowly “climb” on the kerb I sudenly heard some strange noise like if it was heavy rain falling on my bonnet. When I opened the bonnet part of the cable was ripped. Can I just buy a new belt and exchange it like you did?

rjh2464 says:

Had one of these fitted on my c5 hdi. I also had the timing belt(full kit) done at the same time. I took it back to the mechanic three times and told him something wasn’t right ,and he just fobbed me off. After two months the cambelt slipped and caused major damage. He eventually admitted he had fitted the belt wrong. He has had my car for 5 weeks and its still in bits!!

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

It wasnt bought off the internet i just went to my local motor factors, any of them ebay ones should do fine.

d1977j says:

can you link me up to your part?

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

The motorfactors said it was solid i just took their word for it, it could very well be a dampened one. it certainly looks like the dampened pulley in the ebay listing.

d1977j says:

r u sure this is solid part? it could be just diffrent design for dampening, and looks like solid part.
this ebay looks solid 120569403450, and this is specified as dampened 370819601036???

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Great stuff, glad to hear it saved you some money.

llokoja says:

Well thanks this worked on my Peugeot 1.4 hdi you speared me like 150 €

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Thanks

dmotors27 says:

I see, yes deffo would be easier taking them off. Great vid for ppl to go by.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Its possible, sometimes i take extra steps such as this for better access to get the camera in.

dmotors27 says:

I did this today on my 406 without taking out the ecu and box.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Ive never actually worked on a 306 HDi, only XUD ones. Thats good to know about the clearance, i havent got any spanners that are flat.

Martin Seaman says:

The 306 Hdi is done the same way but there is less room to work with, you can’t even get a hand between the bodywork and the engine. The 15mm combination spanner to slacken the pulley needs to have the kink taken out of it so it’s straight and doesn’t go on the nut at an angle or it fouls the bodywork and the alen key that locks it in the slackened position needs to be extended so it’s about a foot or so long, everything else is the same. Great video, thanks!

Martin Seaman says:

My 306 sounds the same looks like you found the culprit for me 😉

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Ahy its a scary sound, it sounds worse than it really is. Luckily its cheap and easy to fix.

Evaldas Efkaldas says:

ty man !i had the same bad saund and was scared what the hell is this
