One of the most important decisions we will make on the road to becoming a therapist is whether to get a PHD or masters degree. In general, I tend to advice people to go the masters route, but there are exceptions to that. Things to consider include whether this will be a first or second career, whether you feel comfortable with academic hoops and are good at writing and math, whether you later want to take insurance, whether you are confident this job is for you, and whether you are sure you want to only see clients, versus doing research or assessments. This video will share my personal, unfiltered thoughts as someone who, while glad I got my PHD when I was young, would get my masters degree if I were starting off now.
