You would have to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. You may want to
see if it’s coming from the AC compressor clutch. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
My air conditioning blows cold air but there is a high pitched squeaking
that starts when the air conditioning is turned off. There is almost no
unusual sounds when the AC is on. Does the whole compressor have to be
replaced or is there an easier fix other than the bypass pulley?
If the A/C has not worked in a long time, the bearings inside the unit
could be bad and will require you to replace the entire unit or try and
find a A/C bypass pulley like you saw in the video. You can view the one we

Maybe a little. You probably wouldn’t notice a huge difference.
that works on some vehicles but for most then tensioner is located in a
spot where if there is no pulley for the a/c, it will not work correctly.
thanks so much for the help 1aauto (guy). i’m about to check yalls site
out. i just did the whole procedure, but i wanted to know if there is any
adjustment that can be made to the pulley other than taking the bolt out
and adding the washer that came with it, because i think it needs to be two
more millimeters towards the firewall, and i didn’t wanna take the bolt off
if its not adjustable (i think the belt being off mighta made my power
steering pump start going “rrrrrrrrrrrrr”…?, thanks!
So I need to take it somewhere to evacuate the system first before doing
this instillation? There’s something wrong with my a/c compressor on my
Saturn SL2 and whenever it’s turned on there’s a horrible squeal (my guess
is a seized/bad clutch causing tension on the belt), but I don’t have the
money for a new a/c unit (around $250 for part alone). Thanks for the
helpful vid, sucks that the compressor is buried underneath so much on this
vehicle!
@bobmortock If your system still has pressure, yes legally you have to take
it to have it evacuated.

@redemtion90 Fixing an AC system can cost 100’s sometimes 1000’s. On an
older car rather than fixing it (which might cost more than the car is
worth) you can remove the compressor put one of these bypass pulleys in
still use your same belts and not worry about the ac.
@pescanseco If the system has been properly discharged you should be okay.

You may want to make sure that the radiator fan is kicking off and on
correctly. You could have a bad radiator fan motor or possibly a bad fan

after replacing the compressor with the pulley do i have to worry about
having open lines that were previously connected to the actual compressor.
@pescanseco You may want to zip tie them off to something so that they don
not move around.

will not be any built up pressure, there may be some charge left in our

hey i have a cavalier and when i have the a/c off it makes alot of noise
until i turn it on. once on it stops all the noise. i could care less about
a/c can i do this to correct it. i was told it was the a/c clutch and it
has loose bearings

I bought this and had a maniac install it. It works great except now my
care gets hot when I sit too long or I drive real slow for some reason. We
tried changing the thermostat already but that didn’t work. Any ideas on

Hows it work, my ac compressor is grinding, never used air, dont need it,
im looking for a cheep route..anyone know the belt size? really cant find
any info online about just getting a shorter belt for a 99 cavi, i mean ill
buy the bypass pulley if necessary but i really would like to just buy a
shorter belt, far less hassle..

Great trick to know have used it many times expecialy if you r going to
replace the belt anyway take a piece of string follow the pulleys bypass
the the compressor go to autoparts store get a belt as long as the string
use this on many 5.0s to bypass smogpump
My son and I just changed the belt on our ’96 Olds 98. We thought it would
stop a squeal we were having but it didn’t. We notice the noise is louder
by the A/C unit. We are wondering if the AC unit is making noise via
improper fluid or the bearings are shot? If the A/C unit if faulty do you
sell a replacement pulley for it?

i got a 96 serria sle c1500 and i want to bypass my ac compressor, will i
have better fuel economy/performance?
As another option, it appears from the belt diagram under the hood that you
could replace the existing serpentine belt with the shorter serpentine belt
for the “No A/C” model and bypass the compressor. What is your opinion of
that solution?
