How To Fix A Car That Idles Poorly

Hector Garcia-Martinez says:

I have a 02 explorer and a 02 Hyundai. When I drive the explorer on the
free way and go 65mph the rpm needle sets below 3000 however when I drive
the Hyundai the rpm needle stays at 3000 or little more! I think this is
why the Hyundai eats a lot of gas and it has a 3.8liter vs 4.0liter on my
explorer. What do you think the problem is???

hammerofjezabel says:

The crappy and expensive K&N filters are another cause of dirty MAF and
throttle body.

blazinfox88 says:

Um Scotty can i do this type of work on a 1991 BMW 328i

larry baskin says:

Hey Scotty,We cant view any of your videos,i guess you just helped too many
people from GETTING RIPPED OFF!

Kyle Maes says:

99% of the time it is your MAF Sensor not your IAC or Throttlebody.
If it was IAC you wouldn’t idle at either hot or cold.
The throttle plates are called butterfly valves.
If your throttle doesnt get stuck to the floor or stuck up it’s fine.

webofdoom416 says:

Yesterday the car started went to work in the morning 6 am. came home 6 pm
.went out and got pizza. today I added transmission fluid ( was a little
low ) and also added oil as again( low ) on oil a little. It was raining
,tried to start car cranks over but wont start any suggestions ??

FxScalper says:

Could be a bad TPS too Scotty…right?

Chris Carroll says:

Hi Scotty, before I ask a question, I’d just like to say that I’ve seen
almost every one of your videos and you really are a great help, I love
what you do. I even made a little joke video for you, if you click on the
link below you can watch it. Anyway, I’m no mechanic, but ever since
finding your channel, I have been doing loads of my own work, and I have
saved loads of money thanks to you. But, I have come across something
rather peculiar that I can not work out, or find on youtube. Basically,
it’s about my brakes. If I press the brake pedal the car slows down as
normal, but just as it is slowing to around 10mph something makes a
knocking sound and the abs light comes on. Then it goes back off once I
have stopped. The car is a Audi A4, 2000. 1.8 petrol Turbo. I have no clue
what this could be. Do you have any ideas. No worries if you don’t, thanks.

Jose Vidrio says:

Yes, my car has a poor idle, has code p0353 now. What do I do?

Michael Baez says:

Thanks Scotty! Tried it and it worked on my 4 cylinder 2000 Honda Accord.
Such a huge difference with such minor maintenance!!

John Aliwalas says:

hi scotty, i have a 1999 lexus RX 300 my problem is when you put it in
drive the idle goes down around 7000 and i fell it shaking, and put it on
park or nuetral the idle is good and smoth, and the gas mileage is so poor,
i replaced all the spark plug still doing the same.. no engine light is
on.what do you recommend to replaced.thank you

Kyle valle says:

Hi Scotty, I recently bought a 1994 ford ranger 180,000 miles. I changed
the plugs, wires, valve cover gasket, fixed all vac lines and flushed the
radiator put fresh coolant. The truck still runs rough and there is a little
bit of water coming out the tailpipe but no heavy smoke. Also there is a
hole in exhaust, do you have any suggestions??? Great videos BTW

JuggernautOfWar says:

If an engine idles poorly it could just need the idle screw adjusted. I
adjust the idle screw in my Camaro twice a year as the cold or hot seasons
begin. All you need is a wrench and maybe screwdriver depending on what
kind of filter you have installed.

Ryan Allen says:

Did this and then got the P0431 on a friends 2001 Mitsubishi Montero. It no
longer stalls though. Now I’m worried he’s not gonna be able to pass
emissions. Any help would be appreciated!

oasalbay says:

Scotty,I have 2000 Dodge Stratus that the whole brake lights are off.Do you
think the fuse is the problem or something else? thank you!

robin1987100 says:

Hey Scotty,
Thanks again for the help last time! I do seem to have a new (unrelated)
problem now. I’ve got a mitsubishi colt 1.3 glxi from the late 90’s (cable
operated throttle). Over the past months its been idling more and more
unstable, particulary when the engine is cold. Dropping to 500 rpm, stays
there for quite a while, then it goes up again (over 1000rpm) before it
goes back down, in little steps towards 500 rpm. When the engine is hot
however, it behaves a lot better, rpm goes up and down from 700 to 1000. I
guess cleaning it out won’t hurt anyway. But i am curious if it perhaps
indicates another problem.

Christon Taylor says:

Hi scotty, i cleaned my throttle body and now i idles high in park and
neutral about 1500 in neutral and 2000 rpm in park. help me please, its a
nissan note 2005 i think.

marco antonio ortiz says:

My car shut off when I shift on reverse. What it may be the problem?

Hardik Jariwala says:

i have just got diagnostic my vw polo 2001 as EPC lights been turning on
since last 8 months. and report comes up with exhaust gas recirculation
system -excessive glow detected.

Can you please explain me about this and if possible can you also tell me
the solution.

Thanks

,new cables, Spark plugs, cover and everything , they already check battery
and alternator they say was good it was driving ok but stop on me again and
check engine show again ..do you think is the alternator is bad?

Michael Buso says:

Great video. I have a 2003 Mazda 6 that just had a Tune-Up. Now when I
get to 30-35 mph, the RPM needle goes up and down. Any idea what’s going
on?

CW reed says:

Hey Scotty, first time commentor. I have a 1996 Subaru Legacy L Wagon that
has been having VERY bad idle issues. It idle’s all over the place, and
doesn’t matter if in P N or D… so Trans (AT) is out yes? Just started a
bit ago, and on the freeway, will keep going hesitantly, but lower speeds
it just wants to die. I have friends that work on Subi’s but are at a loss
as to what it is. Ideas?

Haris Mustagrudić says:

Well, mine 2002 Corolla (european version, hatch, 1.6 vvt-i) still idles
poorly after I put in original Denso MAF sensor. Next stuff to change?
Maybe I should clean throttle but if i manage to do it…

longboardlesage says:

Hey Scotty,
I went to local shop today for a “tune up” they put in new plugs, wires,
and cleaned the throttle plate and ran injection cleaner in it. And i t
now runs WORSE way Worse. Its almost like the timing, or the distributor is
messed up. Any ideas??? originally it had a slight missfire, and
was struggling to start.

David Le says:

Thanks Scotty. I am glad I just subscribed to your channel. This is so
helpful.

TwistedRainbowDash says:

Scotty, I have an ’86 Ford Bronco II that surges randomly when driving and
idling, I cant find a MAF Sensor anywhere on it, what could be the problem?

mexistentialism says:

Hi Scotty, I just bought a 1982 Mazda 626 (85K o.g. miles) and it runs
pretty well. However, it idles a little rough, jumping between 500 and 800
rpm. What really worried me was a time that I drove it about 20 miles on
the freeway, stopped to run and errand, and when I tried to start it back
up again it wouldn’t turn over. Thought I smelled gas. It did start back up
after about 15 mins and multiple tries. Did I flood the carb?

Robert Phelps says:

Scotty need your help I have a low idle problem with my 1999 Ford Explorer
XLT 4.0 SOHC. After warm-up the idle goes down to 450 to 500 rpm it does
not fluctuates. This started three yrs ago after having the fuel pressure
regulator replaced. I have no check engine lite or codes that have come
up. I have cleaned the throttle body, replaced the air control valve, but
still a low idle. If you have any input it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you Robert

seran andrei says:

Hy Scotty.. i have a problem with my skoda fabia 1.4mpi.. when i start the

meyer3738 says:

I have a 2010 suzuki sx4 that has a horrible idle… it shakes real bad,
and sometimes it hesitates when accelerating, it seems like when the trans
shifts it jumps back THEN shifts… i had someone look at it and they said
to change the spark plugs…. does that sound right?
I tried doing this method and the throttle body was pretty dirty.. when I
went to start it after, it took a few tries before it started which was
unusual….

TheRfleming says:

Hay Scotty do liquid sealents work for head and intake gaskits?????

Peter Lysiak says:

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2000 Toyota Avalon that is having an Idle Control System
Malfunction. I was wondering if there is anything else that you would do
besides the below video. Thanks for the help!

How To Fix A Car That Idles Poorly

pontiac g5 says:

I have a Pontiac G5 manual trans that hangs when shifting. Do you think
that it could be from the throttle body pushing air into the engine?

TheLoker3 says:

your awesome

Disciple0fMetal says:

I got an 02 mitsubishi lancer
For the past couple of months the car has been shaking more and more while
idle/park.
I watched this video and decided to remove the throttle body piece and
clean it throughly from both sides as well as the mass airflow sensor. So
far the car has performed better! However i got another issue, the rpm
stays at 2000 when in park and whenever I start the car when before it used
to hover around 1000 and under. Where should I start?

559ALTOSAX says:

hi scotty i have a 1996 toyota corolla and while im stopped at a red light
my car often seems like it is hiccuping also i have a -0302 code when i
plug it in i changed the spark plug wires and distributor cap is fine could
it be fuel injectors? and if so would cleaning them help?

Ashley C'imone says:

Hey scotty can you help me I have a 95 buick roadmaster and my car keep
turning over. and my mechanic sprayed some spray in my hose it crak but
then it started shaking and turned off could it be the battery.

MeekoTrickshotz says:

i have a 1990 honda civic. it stalls when im at a stop sometimes. its a
fuel injector one but where is the throttle body located on this? under the
fuel injector?

Junior Lara says:

My 94 5.0 does not keep a steady rpm. Always fluctuates between 1000 and
500 rpm. When its about to hit 500 rpm it’ll rev up back to 1000 and does
this consecutively until it shuts off. What could be the issue?

99whitecav says:

Hey scotty awesome videos been watching them a while, about time someone
made videos like this to help people. i went to school for auto mechanics
but my 97 civic with a jdm b18b1 swap (integra engine) is giving me hell.
idles completely normal, but as soon as i touch the throttle between any
over idle to about 1300-1500 rpm it almost seems like its misfiring over
and over but its not, over 1500rpm it kicks back to regular revs all the
way up. i thought maybe tps but i pulled the booster line, as soon as i
pluged the booster line it started doing it at idle. going to try the cigar
trick and see about vac leaks but if its not that it must be electrical of
some kind any advice you could throw my way would be much appreciated.
engine light is on after clearing codes as well. but only 2 codes p1509 and
p0141. one is o2 sensor i know for sure its missing, other is telling me
IACV circuit failure.

Ahmed Ouellet says:

Hello, my car Vibrates when I hit break and go around 20-30 Kph why Is
that? I had a problem before, it was powersteering leak from the Stearing
box, in the moment I got that leak, my car starts to Viprate at the same
day

David Roggenkamp says:

This is one method for cleaning an air intake/throttle body, but it doesn’t
necessarily fix an idle problem. Great work on showing us the carbon
cleaner though – I never knew how to do this up until last year and it
would have been a great reference.

SwPiotrek says:

Great video,
Thanks.
