How do u know that u need a knock sensor? Like what are the signs?

Essabba says:

I have a check engine light on. Pep Boys ran diag. and said I had to
replace the knock sensor. And also said the light usually wont come on for
knocking. You are saying the complete opposite. I don;t hear knocking or
pinging. If it is sensing knocking do you have a suggestion on how to fix
it? Thanks

ozzstar says:

Good question. This particular model year the check engine light will NOT
light up on the dashboard indicating there is a problem with the knock
sensor. I happened to run a diagnostic scan tool for something else and
this code appeared. The key evidence was even though the car had premium
fuel I would occasionally hear slight pinging from the engine under hard
acceleration. After the repair the pinging was gone and so was the hidden
trouble code on the scan tool. Hope that helps, take care.
