i used to be a nissan technician. those V6 belts were a pain in the ass to
replace but easier than the 4 cyl

smitchelle says:

Is it the same procedure for the 2.5 engine ( Nissan Rogue)?

Johnnysshop says:

@ravaughan Left to loosen them..

Johnnysshop says:

Wow. Sounds to me like they did not tighten the tensioner back down. I
assume this is what that are referring to about the bracket. So I assume
the belt slipped back off?

googIereallysucks says:

How much tension should the belt have?

Johnnysshop says:

@moonoverdallas13 Typically a serp belt is done by feel. I’m sure there is
an expensive gauge to test this but I would bet anything most shops don’t
have them and those that do don’t use them.

rig48 says:

thanks…ill try it on my 07 maxima.

Johnnysshop says:

Ahh.. Sounds like they should have replaced that in the first place. I
could see them charging you for the tensioner but the tow and new belt
should be at no cost to you. They should also discount the labor to install
the tensioner since they could have easily replaced the tensioner when
replacing the first belt. Good luck…

Johnnysshop says:

@dk038967 Just by feel…

hp11208 says:

@iammikedood lol

Johnnysshop says:

Thanks and thanks for watching! You can get them from Sears, Snap-On,
etc… Harbor Freight carries them but I don’t recommend those. They snap
at the pin. I’m using Craftsman.

Johnnysshop says:

It’s different from what I understand. Concept is still the same though.

Cale Childers says:

the procedure will be the same. you should really replace the power
steering belt as well though. it is directly adjacent to the other belt on
the side of the engine.

Johnnysshop says:

@peacepinky21 You’re welcome!

Johnnysshop says:

Awesome!

Johnnysshop says:

I believe so.

Johnnysshop says:

@hondaguy453 Sorry for the delay. You might want to make sure the tensioner
screw isn’t stipped or didn’t lose the nut. I believe there was a nut
holding it in. I don’t remember exactly though. We traded it in so I have
no way to check 🙁

peacepinky21 says:

@Johnnysshop Thank you so much for the info.!!!!:)

Johnnysshop says:

Thanks, yeah I have much better lighting in the garage now so it should
help a lot. I have some shop lights but they always seem to be too bright.
I’ll get it figured out eventually. I usually just make this videos on the
fly but I’m trying really hard to actually start planning them.

MrDiamondprincess843 says:

Hi I recently had my serpentine belt replaced on my altima and I paid
120for labor because they said it took one and a half to do n 40for the
part. After I had my car fixed it broke down again now the shop saying the
bracket pop off and now they want 100 for the part and another 70for labor.
Am I being taking advantage of because I’m a female. Thanks any advice will
help

Johnnysshop says:

@juakingjr 3.5?

Johnnysshop says:

You are correct on all counts. Squealing can also come from cheaper belts.
If you didn’t get OEM it could be that but I would snug it up a bit first.

jekyll1776 says:

Hello, been watching a few of your mechanical videos. Great stuff, love the
shop and everything. But something that would help a lot would be a
droplight around where ur working or a little LED flashlight tapped to your
camera, less fiddling that way. Hope to see move of your videos.

Johnnysshop says:

Should be the same. Glad I could help..

Michael Oberdorf says:

There is a bigger sized pulley on my left side that doesn’t move at all is
that normal. It’s also a nissan altima 3.5 2005

LowerDeez says:

Do you think this would work for a 02 Nissan Maxima ? its a v6 3.5L as well

Johnnysshop says:

One is the tensioner but I believe it moves a little. Does it spin with the
car running?

Johnnysshop says:

LOL.. Cheap Harbor Freight gloves…

magnificent10304 says:

Thanks for the post, in the process now cuz i had to change the alternator
in which you have to remove the radiator which wasn’t hard just crazy that
u have to

Johnnysshop says:

@CoDyBeAr604 The top one if I remember correctly.

iammikedood says:

how much would it cost for this i have the belt my parents just wont let me
do it myself how much would it cost for labor to do this

BRIGHAMIX says:

Hi i have an altima 05 2.5 and i want to see if it’s the same prosses to
change the serpentine belt .

Hank Danford says:

Thanks man! Very helpful… I was going to swap out the smaller belt too,
but couldn’t figure out how to get it loose? I ended up not messing with it
because it looked fine, but will eventually need to do it.

magnificent10304 says:

This was hell for me, it’s basically everything in this vid with the
addition you have to take out the radiator, i laughed when i heard that
until i went to take out the Alternator an sure enough i had to remove the
radiator WTF!!! Then the assecory belt tensioner bracket was seized an
snapped in two SMH…. goin to pick up the dealer item only as i type

Johnnysshop says:

@tennesseetitan78 Thanks for watching. Glad I could help!

Johnnysshop says:

Yeah, you have to really loosen that booger up. Almost like it will fall
out.

hondaguy453 says:

I replaced my timing chain and all that good stuff recently, and I’m stuck
on this step lol. I don’t remember how to tighten the belt though (thanks
to my short term memory). I know you leave the nut on the tensioner loose,
then tighten the long nut closest to the alt, but it isn’t getting tight at
all… This is my last step and It’s frustrating!!

Johnnysshop says:

@cgodfrey19 LOL.. Thanks!

CoDyBeAr604 says:

Hey there! Im looking to replace the serpentine belt and which 14 mm nut
has to be loosend first?

bryan yanes says:

mechanic is charging me $90 to replace this is this a resonable price ? for
my 05 altima 2.5 s

Johnnysshop says:

@MrBkindahouse Awesome!

alexander1485 says:

that engine bay is dirty but this is a great video!

peacepinky21 says:

r the altamas and maximas the same motor and to you put the belts on the
same way…Thank you

MrBkindahouse says:

Bro you saved me money.

MrDiamondprincess843 says:

Thanks for replying back. The first time they said my belt popped and I
paid to have it replaced. The next day my car broke down on the highway and
they paid to get my car towed back to their shop. Now they saying I have to
get the bracket replaced because that was the reason why the belt popped
off again.

Johnnysshop says:

Why are you thinking of leaving?

Johnnysshop says:

Thanks, glad I could help!

Johnnysshop says:

@peacepinky21 Yes, as along as they are both 3.5’s

hawkeyemmx says:

so the top bolt sets the tension? i just had both belts and acc tensioner
replaced 8000 miles ago. i am getting a squealing noise the first couple
seconds when i turn on my 3.5 altima in the morning when its cold. i
believe its because the belt isn’t tight enough and is slipping. (does that
sound resonable?) so to tight the tension i just have to turn that bolt on
top clockwise?
