That looks like a stainless steel you cannot Weld stainless steel the way you just did. It Has to be Filled with gas inside the pipe. If you don’t the Weld inside, looks like Sugar.
nice setup looks like. i tend to be pretty aitodidactic as well. I am just starting using my tig setup on my big multiprocess machine. its dc and scratch start only though

You have to grind or sand the chrome off. dissimilar metals dont mix when welding.

When welding put all your thought into what your doing and take your time. It takes a while but you will get the hang of it. Love the car by the way.
