2007-2012 Nissan Altima Cabin Air Filter Replacement -EricTheCarGuy

This cabin air filter replacement video applies to forth generation (2007-2012) Nissan Altima’s. Some parts of this procedure may also apply to other Nissan models.

It’s a simple process and doesn’t require a lot of tools. It can also save you a great deal of money replacing this maintenance item yourself. Not to mention it will help keep the air inside your vehicle free from contaminants.

The average replacement interval is every 15K, sometimes as low as 10K based on the air quality where the vehicle is being used.

Where should the arrows point? To the back or front of the car? If I insert my filter with the tab at the bottom as I saw in some videos, the arrows point to the front. Confusing.

I do not know why the manufacturer designs the location of the cabin filter in such a difficult place to reach. It took me 30 minutes to replace the filter. The 2017 Honda Civic filter is easier to reach. Both 2008 Altima and 2017 Civic air filters are easy to be replaced but not the 2006 Passat.

Y make a filter hard to do. Seriously tho u need a dam air filter degree to do so of these fuckers

thespian200 says:

I had a dealer replaced the filter on my wife's 2009 Altima about 4 years ago.  After watching this and a few other videos, I decided to give a try for this daunting task.  It seems from the video and comments that taking out the dirty filter won't be quick and easy, but for me it was zero effort.  How?  Because there was NONE in the housing!  The dealer took the dirty one out and simply put the plastic cover back on, and charge me for parts and labor!   I guess they thought I would never want or be able to do it myself in the future so that I could find out what they did?!  Shame on them!

A few things that helped me:
1.  Take both glove box and the plastic panel on the left foot side out. They were easy to do and gave me more arm/hand room to access the filter;
2.  When the new filter was pushed into the housing, continue to wiggle it in/out and up/down to loosen it up and "expand" back to its original shape, especially for some thick 3-layer filters like mine;
3.  When putting back the plastic housing cover, apply some pressure on the upper part of the cover while sliding it up until it clicks in at the top, then push the bottom in to lock;

And yes, I confirm that the airflow direction should point to the back of the car.  This is because when I put my fingers in the housing, I felt fins from the exchanger on my left side (car cabin side) and maybe a screen on the right (engine) side.  That made me believe the fan motor must be behind the exchanger on the left side, thus the airflow direction must point to the back of the car.

I seen a video on a 09 altima they got the filter from the side kick panel passenger side then pulled of the cover and pulled it out

Nissan engineers suck, why do they make this so difficult.

GREAT ALTIMA.

Katrina Lindahl says:

You're doing so much work for nothing just reach your hand all the way underneath there and pull it out it ain't that hard it took me only two minutes to do mine and I never did it before

David Sztrimbely says:

Thnx for the detailed video, really helps to visualize the whole thing. The part about the air flow direction confused me too. It seems like you should install it with the air flow pointing towards the rear no? Not sure how the "ducts" are configured, but i imagine the air goes straight through to the vents. Maybe you should update ur video with a caption or something to address this since its pretty important. Also as an alternative, access the filter through the bottom, saw it done on another video. Both ways work, but maybe the way u prescribe is more useful for people who need space.

John Alden says:

Please note Some Altimas have NO Cabin Filter period. I know because I followed the video for my 2010 Altima, removed the glovebox and sure enough, no filter or place to put it. Called the dealer and was told "Yup, some Nissans were built without provision for a cabin air filter". Tells you something.

Sam Tatge says:

I now know why the small plate for the filter compartment is missind

Don't need to remove glove box 07-12 Altima

Steve C says:

I am having trouble getting the upper lip of the cabin air filter door to attach to the housing and be able close the bottom clip onto the bracket. The lip gap seems too narrow to fit on the housing.

A J says:

I somehow manage to break the tab off the air filter cover every time I do this.

willgtl says:

There is no need to remove the glovebox. Just reach under, take the filter housing door off, pull the old filter out. To install the new filter, pinch it in the middle, slip one corner in and kinda roll it into the slot. Very easy.
