I took the rear passenger tire off and left everything else intact (spare tire, sway bar). Positioned myself under the car and started with the top nut, taking it off and then using a pry bar or flat head screwdriver to get the shock rubber bushing to release from the bolt. Once you get it started you can wiggle it off with a little effort. From the outside of the wheel well you can see the “weld” of the top bolt on to the frame to help with location, and push off the shock from that angle too.
Excellent vid! Actually makes me confident to do my own instead of shelling out $700 parts and labor to my mechanic *UGH* ($1000 if I wanted Bilsteins!!) What a ripoff, so tired of paying for labor. I took a quick peek under my X and the left shock looks like a tight squeeze with the muffler. What was your angle of attack on that top nut?

This video helped a lot when I replaced my own rear shocks on a 2004 Xterra. I decided to drop the spare tire to give me more wiggle room in dealing with the passenger-side shock. Thanks!!
The front-shocks are a bugger! The bottom retainer bolts require a special 3/4 (or metric equivalent) socket/wrench. This bolt is 4-sided and a standard/metric socket or wrench will NOT work.
