Yes I’d have liked to see that myself because on the pictures I have seen of the belt tensioner all I see is a round hole that does not look like it would take a socket. Otherwise a good video.

Autotechviewpoint says:

sorry I did not get that on the video.

jockonj says:

It was very unclear about the belt tensioner and how to tackle it. It’s a critical point to doing the job.

Autotechviewpoint says:

I appreciate the comments, glad to help.

The main thing I like about your video is that you tell the wrench sizes you need to do the job. My alternator AND power steering went Kaput at the same time so I’ll be replacing both. I am in Callaway County Missouri USA. I’ll visit your tip jar once I finish the job. I like you idea of the tip jar. You may have saved me a big labor bill.

Autotechviewpoint says:

It likely is, I do not know exactly how to get it out. Take a good look with a flashlight to find it, if you haven’t located it exactly yet. Book time to replace it is 1.3 hours so, not that quick of a job.

Is the metal base where the alternator is sitting on removable? I’m trying to get to the oil pressure switch.

Autotechviewpoint says:

should be able to do this in a couple hours.

How long did the whole process take? I am thinking of buying a used however very well taken care of 2000 ford windstar, the owner is currently driving it, drove it today to pick up the wife and the alternator went. I used to have a pontiac montana and that was hell to replace. So before we bring it home it needs to be replaced at this guys home. Thank you.

Autotechviewpoint says:

Dis-connecting the battery should not cause the odometer to go to zero. You need to go to a shop to have it checked out if that happened after dis-connecting the battery.

nashwan jabri says:

I live in MI is disconnecting the battery will effect the setup of the car I have Ford WindStar 2003, my odometer got zeroed and only showed trip mileage. and how can I fix it, Thanks.

Autotechviewpoint says:

voltmeter and amp meter. Yes you can use what is called a lab scope and see a nice display of what is going on with the performance of the alternator, you can see voltage ripples and amp wave form, and compare them to known good signals.

Frederic Jaimes says:

hello i´m from south america thanks for the video, it really helps me a lot , i have a question what kind of tool you use to diagnose the alternator, ??its an espeial amperimeter i´ve never seen one of those with a display showing the signal wave in real time

MrBookiekiller says:

botlt sizes on alternator the wired round top one 10 MM the three mounting bolts on top 15 MM if doing tension pulley with socket wrench 13 MM I think all ford vans V6 side mount engines from 1998 up to 2003 are same setup.

MrBookiekiller says:

yup got it done as alwys difernt setup with differnt vehicles. I was thinking same as old style front mount V 8 engines when you had to adjust alternator on it’s own belt. LOL Same thing trying to get one off on My Van i was trying to move idler pulley! After going to mechanic and finding out the tension pulley was in back under water pump i decided to pay him $35 to install the replacement with me helping of course1 With long pry bar he pryed the pulley i removed belt alterantor switched 1/2 hr

MrBookiekiller says:

forgot i’m in Pa east side border NJ

MrBookiekiller says:

ok i have 99 ford windstar i thought i had to remove the 3 bolts facing fender omg the 3 on top are easier to remove. But the two bolts i removed were through alternator into bracket on the junk van at yard. now what do i do? Have to go buy 13 MM short socket to remove the 3rd bolt facing fender but am i wrong do those bolts stay in when i take mines out and only remove the top 3 bolts? Thats all i need an answer to Thanks.

Jaime Greer says:

Nicely done. Had I known how easy and straight forward this was I would have done it myself. But My local mechanic did it all plus battery and towing the van to his garage for $300. which I think is very fair.

Autotechviewpoint says:

I bet you can just turn the wheel to give you the most access, and remove splash shield if you have one. I would just be a tighter fit with the wheel on.

steadicamrickshaw says:

Question: can you get to the tensionor through the wheel well without taking off the tire?

Autotechviewpoint says:

Sorry If i did not mention it in the video, I am trying to mention the sizes in the videos. Always good to have a good set of 3/8 and 1/2 sockets and ratchets and breaker bars.

Noel127 says:

If we dont have a power tool like you do, What wrench / socket wrench would you recommend? Size and all?

Warmest regards and Thanks from TEXAS.

Thank you Sir.

Thank you for this!

I had an alternator problem on my 2006 mustang 4.0 SOHC. What happend was my battery died so I replaced it. And then 3 weeks later the new battery was runnning only 12 volts (70% full). So I replaced the altenator, and now all is well. Same problem with my friends 2008 Ford Escape.

Autotechviewpoint says:

Totally agree do not do this type of testing on todays newer vehicles.

bobbydraper says:

DO NOT ever remove battery cables when engine is running on vechicles equiped with an alternator! This creates an open circuit which tiggers the alternator to go to full charge mode, thus causing alternator failure. The cable removal test was used on older model cars equiped with a Generator, not an alternator.
Your parts supplier will not warranty a new, remanufactored, rebuilt or used altenator that you fried by preforming the cable removal test.

LordHighCheese says:

Thank you for this video, the tensioner on a 1998 Windstar is in the same place which I did not realize till I watched you video.
