Power Tilt Trim Fix on Mercury 60HP Outboard

I think I fixed my tilt problem on my 60HP Mercury Outboard. I ended up buffing the contacts in the relays and it worked.

I have a newer mercury hardly gets used same fault found out while at the ramp so I switched the relays over just as a process of elimination and sure enough it would go down now but not up so I cleaned the contacts an it fixed it for me I have since been to an auto parts store and bought contact grease it coats the contacts to seal out moisture and I also replaced both of the relays problem now gone cheers

At least it happened at the end of the day! So glad this video helped. Fish on!

Just wanted to say thanks for this video. My brother in-law and I went to Beltzville Lake today in PA. The tilt was working (up/down) all day, was we’re about to leave the tilt would not raise.

We were able to get it on the trailer and out of the loading area, did some googling from the phones.

Most of the things we found were saying to drain the hydraulic fluid and manually raise the motor; while doable, not favorable.

Luckily 2 spare relays were kept on the boat, and this video was found

I have a 2007 Yamaha 90 4 stroke and the trim quit working. What can I do to fix this problem?

shayne wadhams says:

If this does not work your trim and tilt fluid could be low

schustf says:

I would try to clean all the contacts and make sure there isn’t corrosion. Could be a simple fix.

schustf says:

That i’m not sure on. May want to keep checking online or check with a mechanic.

Douglas Slagle says:

My motor trim would not go down and I read your site and tried it. It worked with one relay, but the other would not. I bought a new relay and it still will not work. Any suggestions on what I need to do.

izzyruizjr says:

I need help in operating power trim on my 60hp mariner motor. Again compared to my 50hp Mercury the fuel consumption is just too much. Is the fuel consumption normal of there could be something wrong. Pliz assist.

Gregory Nevinski says:

Boy, what a great video. I had this problem 5 years ago and I just replaced the relay. My new problem is interment and I can’t wait to try your method. I bet it’ll work!

Glad you found it useful!

schustf says:

If the connections are not the issue, it could be the tilt unit itself. There should be a manual way to lower the unit. Mine has a large bolt/pin that can be removed to lower the unit manually. Check your manual or call a marine tech. Hope that helps!

Rev. HERBERT DAVIS says:

My motor is stuck in the upward position. Is there a way to release it down if neither buttons work?

fenderhm0 says:

thanks for posting! very helpful in getting my boat back in action, the green connector thing didnt work but when I switched them I could at least drop the engine back in the water! just need to switch the two connector things to either raise or lower the motor, but it works until I can get a new one!

flyroder bass says:

I found this out the hard way. If one relay responds and the other does not, try replacing the one that does not respond. The circuits must go through both relays for each to work. In my case, the circuit had gone bad in the relay that responded which controlled the other relay. Hope this helps someone else.

Thanks for posting this video. The UP trim on my Tracker didn’t work at the end of fishing yesterday. Found your video, which led me to look at the relays. Didn’t see any corrosion, tried sanding lightly, but trim was still intermittent. I found replacement relays for $8 each at Pep Boys, and that seems to have worked. Tried replacing just the bad one, but needed to do both to get it to work consistently. $16 well spend if it keeps working. Thanks again.

schustf says:

Hopefully your fix was this simple! Thanks for the comment!

CHARLES COOK says:

great video and illustration I will check this on my 90 merc when I get home today ….I hope that is all I will need, wish me luck

schustf says:

i would think it would be a trim related problem not a moisture problem.

schustf says:

Sorry I have not changed that yet.

liv4daoutdoors says:

have you ever changed the fluid in a trim and tilt system?

schustf says:
