Original diagnosis was a bad trigger and stator. Replaced both and ended up with a smoking starter selonoid with no spark…. This video is how to replace both the trigger and stator on an inline 4 cylinder. I was hoping the switchbox was operational but “hope” is not a good form of being a Mercury Mechanic….videos are longer to illustrate how much time goes into them. Will it talk?! You’ll have to watch to find out! Son
Can you help me with setting timing 2002 40 mercury 2 stroke 1 carb. Thanks for the videos

I’m so thankful I found you’re page lol! Because I literally just picked up the same exact motor. Motor fired up for me, but most of my engine harness is dry rotted and the trigger was also. Was gonna crimp new wires on, but it was to far gone for my liking.
My trigger is brand new and doesn't rotate. I have an '88 Mercury 70hp 2 stroke. Im assuming it's supposed to rotate with the spark advance rod
oh boy have the same motor and wiring is a mess. guess what the issue with it is……. no spark…. really want to go through the wiring first because it is horrible. I guess I got to read through the comments some more. what ended up being the issue? CDI?
I have a 1989 mercury 90hp 3 cylinder . Rectifier might be weak or stator might be weak. It runs very well. I need to get voltage ranges so I can test AC output of stator. DC output of Rectifier is jumping from 20volt to 12volt.
Good afternoon son.
I have a 85 L4 75 hp I have been having a lot of issues with I was wondering if you could help me out with it. Your YouTube is great has great content and you explain a lot. Keep up the good work. Thank you again
Noticed you removed a bent-arm trigger from the engine, but replaced it with a straight arm trigger. Wondering if that is related to the no-spark problem.
Hi guys….nici video….he help me a lot but …I still have a issue…
I've checked the stator from the motor( 80 hp 4 cylinders mercury 1980 )
The 2 blue wires from the first bobin do not have any rezistenta but I still have spark on all 4 cylinders but doesn't start….it's normal??? To have spark if the stator has one bobin is broken???
Many thanks
Hey Son! Thanks for all your content, very helpful in general!
Can you comment on this issue/setup? Trigger not snug on my 2000 Mercury 40HP 644cc ELPT0. 1041412YD
Everything worked after installation (until yesterday which I think is a different problem with the starter) but it just bothers me because the service book didn't mention it, nor does it show any other parts on schematics in between stator-trigger to stop this movement from happening.

Hi, I have an 70s Mercury 80hp 4 cylinder not sure on exact year , having problems with charging system have replace stator, tigger and rectifier as wires were bad used CDI parts but still not charging. I am a mechanic but new to outboard motors checked everything I can think of , would you have any other ideas on what to do or check next. Thanks
I have a 6 cylinder merc that the arm on the trigger broke. I was getting spark on all 6, replaced the trigger with a brand new one and now only get spark on 3/6. Any idea why that might be before I go buying a new stator?
Does it matter that my original stator had a plastic cover around it by Mercury? CDI brand came no cover. Thanks for helping us get back to fishing.
@mercson if u could message em that'd be amazing im having so many problems with my merc 500 50hp ran mint then out no where none ur vids cover my issue and I am lost
Would be awesome if you didn’t put all those effects on your videos.
I have a 1975 850 mercury. Not getting SPARK. How do I check the distributor/ trigger to see if bad. I installed a used trigger / distributor and was up running fine. Now no spark. Can I check the leads with ohms meter ?
I changed the trigger and alternator in my 85 50 HP 4. The previous owner had already taken it apart and marked the flywheel where it bolted to the part attached to the crankshaft. Yup he separated everything but marked location with yellow paint. So I still don't have spark on any cylinder. I ran #1 piston to TDC but How do I know if the flywheel is in the right place? There are no marks I can see. It is past the plastic pointer on the engine block and the numbers for the advance marks maybe are lining up with the pointer. Im looking for a manual or breakdown on line. Lost!
Never give up Son, your helping a lot of us guys .
Hey MercSon I got a Merc 150 sitting on an old hydroplane with a great story behind it. I just broke a part that I’m pretty sure you will have on hand. How can I get ahold of you?
I have a 77 850 thunderbolt and the motor is a beast. Your videos have helped me learn and do some basic stuff with this engine. I don’t know if you do work for other people but this motor is tricky and I have a no start issue. Compression is ok 129, 130, 130, 130 cold. I’ve replaced the switchbox 7 months ago and all was well. But now she won’t start! Also wondering if you sell any parts! Love your videos I watch them regardless of
What motor it is.
Dude from the wall. Add me on Facebook I feel it is hard to communicate here

Ever work on a 402 ?
I noticed the trigger u took off had the curved arm and the new one seemed to have a straight arm. Did u have a different length connector to attached it to the throttle arm
I have the same problem
I wish you were close to St. LOUIS. I have the same engine, 1975 850. After rewiring the entire engine and installed used distributor and new stator, I now have fuel issues. Removed 18 gal fuel tank ins6all new fuel lines, filters, found junk in the tank. I'm hopping this fixes it this time. Glenn. I ready to fish and stop working on the engine. !!
