How to repair outboard with no water coming out the tell tale
Here I go step by step to go through the replacement of the water pump impeller. There may be some differences in the motor you are working on depending on the year but for the most part they are fairly similar.

I got this older Mercury 4.5 HP long shaft motor from a guy that hadn’t run this in years. It started up right away and idled to almost nothing. I noticed water was not running through the TELL TALE and I replaced / changed out of the impeller. This old two stroke motor worked great and the carburetor was still good. After switching up the impeller this worked like a champ and I took it on a 2 week vacation as a kicker and trolling motor.
Boat motor using as a kicker in my river boat, as this is the biggest motor I can get on without my steering bars hitting and not needing a kick plate to hold it up.

linda runion says:

i have a 9.8 Nissan, how do you remove one of the two pins on the shifting rod, without potentially bending the rod, if you use a hammer to knock out one of the pins

Bil Heybruck says:

Super video, I used a zip tie to hold the impeller folded so I could press it on the shaft and over the drive pin. I was looking for the direction of turn too, so thanks for that.

Someday, the truth will prevail. says:

that hose that you had to shave, does that have to fit snug over the tube inside the upper unit? or just kind of go over it loosely?

Jeffrey Mortensen says:

Thanks for the great how to video. I have 2 older mercury engines, a 1970 which looks like it is near new and a 1978 model. Both need impellers replaced. I do have a question. The 1970 engine does not appear to have a top bolt to remove. How do you remove the lower unit? I have not found any video for an engine this old. Thank you.

I have a mercury outboard 2 stoke motor. The guy I bought it from said it was a 20 hp but the serial numbers on the bracket and inside said it is a 45hp. I am having trouble getting the foot off. I removed the nuts and a screw. the back is freed but the forward part will not let it drop. I use liquid wrench and soaked it but it still will not drop. Do you have any ideas that I can try.

Monty McDowell says:

Nice job good explanation thx!

Joe Delago says:

Got it together and now the motor will not shift into reverse….thinking about throwing this thing across the garage….grrrrr

Joe Delago says:

I would love to know how you installed the lower I'm having an issue getting both shafts to seat did you have to use a little force?

Steve H. says:

NUMBER ONE THING. Note what gear the motor is in, It needs to be but back together in the same place, or it will not go back together. Mines in the shop now. That deserved more than just a blip at the end. Also, I suggest a tie rap to bend the impeller, then the string.

Mike Russell says:

Thanks for the post. I knew nothing about impellers prior to your video. I only new the jets stopped shooting out water on my motor. The repair went perfect!
