How to replace the thermostat in a Mercury Grand Marquis, overheating. – VOTD

Thermostat replacement: 30 to 45 minutes ($15 / $110 / $130)

In this video I helped a friend replace a thermostat in their 1999 Mercury Marquis. This process should work for many Mercury vehicles with the V8.

Appears a coolant change was in order, lots of rust. Owner didn't replace antifreeze last time when top hose blew, that is a newer top hose.

I forgot to mention – it's a very good idea to replace the cap on the coolant bottle on these Fords. Most use a 16lb cap, costs something like $7. I pressure test every radiator/coolant bottle cap I come across when I'm servicing vehicles and I've found these Fords have a very high failure rate on the caps (usually won't hold anywhere near 16psi).
