Old gas will gunk up your carb with varnish.. ethanol added to gas makes it
worse.. Try using a fuel additive to your gas like Sta-bil Marine… cheap
insurance IMHO. Also if you have access to a good Ultra sonic cleaner that
will clean out those passages where you can’t spray into. I cleaned up a
really gunky hood fan with hot water and TSP in the ultra sonic cleaner..
wow.. your carb did not look bad at all.. just a clogged passage I bet.

You forgot to show how to remove the float and clean and inspect the float
pin.

Hey man great vid… Helped alot… I was wondering the small circlular
plate with a screw in the middle of it in the carb…should that be tight
and have no ” spaces” on the sides for anything to go thru.. I hope u no
what i mean

i dont know whats wrong with my engine but it wont give fuel to the carb i
have a 4 hp mercury

sumogurinet says:

Thanks!, I saw the Torqeedo electric motor. Looked real nice!

sumogurinet says:

I think the outboard is pretty durable as long as you winterize the motor
correctly and change oil based on the owners manual. I did not remove
gasoline from the motor when i left a long time. Thanks!

SunTime Yurts says:

Are there air/fuel mixtures that must be set with the screws on the outside
of the carb? Or are you supposed to screw them all the way in?

Russ Albers says:

I can confirm that this is identical to a 2005 Merc 4 stroke 5 hp. I could
not even get it to fire once until I performed this ‘cleaning’ procedure
and now it’s starting like new. Thanks very much for the video, I would not
of tried it myself without the clear procedure in this video.

Great video, Id been staring at the linkages wondering how to get it apart
until I saw this ! Carb cleaned and running well Thanks

sumogurinet says:

I believe it is your clogged fuel tube. You can use a carb clearer and blow
the tube. Otherwise, it is the fuel pump. You can clean the fuel pump.
Thanks.

Newton Willows says:

fantastic video. Ijust followed the procedure for my engine that was
running erratic. Now it purrs like a kitten. I should never have left fuel
in it over winter. Thanks so much for the video Dave

Great video, fast right to the point & done. Because I live on the water
folks think that I understand motors, outboards etc., the reality is that
I’m trying to figure out which side of the screwdriver to use. Anyway I get
stuck ripping their stuff apart & guessing how to put it back together. My
? is, I’ve never seen any type of gasket anywhere. No head gasket, carb.,
lower unit nothing. Right now I have a 5 & 3.5 hp Merc. A BF75 &100 & a
Rude6 & not a single gasket-is there a gasket fairy?

thank You!

Excellent video . . . .I have a 2006 ^ HP Merc and have had nothing but
carb problems after the first 1 1/2 years. I use it on a 20 foot sailboat
weighing almost 3000 pounds and I just replaced the gas motor with an
electric Torqeedo which works fine. I do want to get the Merc running and
this vid is a big help! Thanks, Gil

Christian Sotodosos Rodriguez says:

muchas gracias amigo!!! un saludo.

potatoaddict says:

Great video! Just another tip for other viewers: you can turn the black
arms at the top of the carb to open up the choke valve (the black disc) and
the throttle valve (the metallic disc) up a bit more so you can spray the
inside of the carb a lot better!

Zachary Ryan says:

How would u fix a gas leak on a 5hp 4 stroke Nissan motor?

sumogurinet says:

You’re welcome. I am glad that it helped!

Kenneth Graci says:

You did not remove the float or the float valve…that should be part of a
cleaning. Good job overall.

Matt South says:

Great How-To! How reliable has this motor been for you? I just picked up a
brand new one and I’m wondering what to expect over the years.
