If you have that sporadic timing, that when Idling jumps from one side of the tape to the next, or all over the flywheel, sometimes in the decal, sometimes not. I’m going to suspect your trigger is shot. It’s exactly what mine was doing. I would check a few things (found your post on iboats that I was reading yesterday). 1. TDC, 2. Firing Order, 3. Condition of Cap, 4. Coil (tests are in book), 5. Replace dizzy/trigger and try again!!!!

I uploaded a video of the motor not running well, sounds like the trigger is faulty. See what you think..

Checking the rect is easy. Should be simply covered in the manual for your motor. Make sure you get a good pump for the lower unit lube, if you nee me to show you what they look like (available at walmart for around $10.00) I can email it to you pal.

Roy G. Biv says:

Sounds nice, I believe you have it pretty well solved now! Next thing I have to do on mine is check to be sure the rectifier/charging system works and change the lube in the lower unit…then look for some sort of floating transom to test her on! May start on Diablo in the next week or so unless something irresistible falls int my lap! Anyone out there with in NYC area with a hull layin’ around that will take 40HP give me a shout.
