my ’88 Grand Marquis has a 2.73/1 ratio gearset. That is quite tall. When
the AOD trans is in 4th gear (overdrive) the car is sluggish feeling, even
with the 5.0 EFI V8 engine. The good side of that is that it gets like
24-26 mpg highway. Must go 70-80 MPH! Everything’s original, and it has
close to 200k miles. I’ve changed the differential oil twice now, both time
because it needed new axle bearings and seals. Once at 90k mi., and once at
180k mi. The gears are still in excellent shape.
