great info video… I wonder if you could show us how to get to the shift boot (the accordion looking thing surrounding the lever) … it fell into the box and I can’t pull it out or put it back in place…. thanks

fupabox says:

check my other videos on the 722.6 transmission…it covers that exact problem…it’s in the w202 playlist

Hi, In my W202 – 1999 C230 I cannot change my gear to 3, 2, or 1. I can only do D and Reverse. Do you think I have bushing issue if not what is causing this issue ?

fupabox says:

No $ under the console ? that’s half the fun of pulling it out 🙂

Dave the Rave says:

I just wanted to send out a big thank you to fupabox, This vid gave me the info I needed when i broke the shifter unit. PS it can be opened and r&r’d, although reassembly is tricky. by the way all I found was kids sweets under the consol. but I did fix the winter/summer switch whilst putting it back together. result. PPs don’t do it 6.3 engines need uprated running gear, the engine is only 30% of the equation.

fupabox says:

It would be a really tight squeeze if it did..and tons of $ to get everything working right..if you do it make some vids. love to see it

Sonne Hansen says:

Hey Fupabox, ive been watching your videos.
Wish you were in my hood.
Question;im thinking of putting a 6.3amg engine in my w 202 1999
do you think it would fit.

Kevin Kuney says:

no voltage going to starter for ignition so ordered today a neutral safety switch. so its inside shifter box looked under car near transmission just rod going to it.

Kevin Kuney says:

i did take apart console replaced bushing today easy fix. but still not starting pulled codes nothing stating neutral switch or brake light swicth have it coming in mail so guess i can take apart and check switch in working order.i did replace battery 10 years old and hit starter with hammer not even a click thanks for response.

fupabox says:

it’s possible it is the bushing is worn, but yes there is a nuetral start switch inside the shifter assembly

Kevin Kuney says:

also a new stop lamp switch. thanks for your vids did water pump :) and belt, rotors and brakes.

Kevin Kuney says:

have problem starting car now I would shake the shifter to go in and out of park then would start C230 1997. someone said neutral safety switch but don’t our car has one? any thoughts doing bushing to see if thats it. thanks Kevin

fupabox says:

I haven’t worked on a w208..but 1 1/2 hrs seems excessive for sure

Tommy crane says:

Hi can you help I have just watched your vid My issue is that I have just had one fitted to my Mercedes clk2001 w208 which looks almost the same as the one in you vid. They charged me one hour and a half fitting Time. I need a second opinion on the time it took to do this job do you think 1 and a half hour is fair please get back to me as I think he’s ripping me off Tommy England Liverpool

fupabox says:

could be one of the shifter bushings ,possible problem in the shifter mechanism,or even the downshift kickdown switch under the throttle pedal could be stuck…also the MAF sensor can cause shifting problems.. will it shift into reverse N, Park etc. but only the forward gears are toast?

TheMDHouse007 says:

Hey fupa! Hope all has been well! Having a lil trouble here. .. my 98 c230 is stuck in 2nd gear (I think). It will NOT shift at ALL! 3500 rpms @ 30mph. :(( Any tips?!?!?!???

fupabox says:

…..sorry I thought you were referring only to the shifter mechanism bushing..the rear bushings rarely fail..,(in my experience anyway,..I have never had to do a rear one where it attaches to the transmission) ..they would a bit more difficult to replace but shouldn’t be that hard..as I said I have never seen one go bad..if the bushing on the shift lever was gone long enough I guess it would ruin the other more easily…

C Crawford says:

okay bushin was change from top/inside…..however clip came off (looks like flat steel horse shoe) my park is in neutral-my reverse is in drive…went to have car towed and put on lift…the guy said you have another bushin on bottom that needs replacing as well…talk to me FUPABOX is there another bushing-does this car have 2 bushing for transmission area???

fupabox says:

yes there is only 1 ..goes between the shifter assembly and the transmission shift actuator rod…you can get to it from top or bottom

C Crawford says:

Thanks soo much sir….so there’s only one bushin….folks say there’s one in the bottom under transmission…but you make it seems as though theres only “1” and it can be entered from top as well as bottom for the gear shift. I have a c280 1997 sport…..All i need is an allen wrench….thanks again.

fupabox says:

yes as long as you have room to crawl under..on jack stands or ramps…you will see it easily..there isn’t a ton of room to get your hands in there though and pressing the bushing in is a bit of a pain although I have done it before with a pair of long needle nosed pliers…from the top is cleaner, and less fussy..but more stuff to remove

C Crawford says:

i need to know if i can go under the car to change gear bushin-without car being on lift….is it visible????…

C Crawford says:

i need to know if i can go under the car-without it being up on a lift to change the gear shift bushin…..what screws must i remove.

Lance L says:

Does anyone know if this is the same for the C200 mercedes (1997) ?

fupabox says:

I had a piece of hard rubber grommet that had the same inner diameter as the transmission connecting arm..and the outer slipped nicely through the hole in the shift lever lower shaft

itsmkv says:

jfyi, the front linkage one can be seen right under the car if you follow that rod/plate towards the engine. I can barely fit my hand in there, stops at the wrist

fupabox says:

no I haven’t …but I’ll take a look at it and let you know

itsmkv says:

Have you replaced the other shifter bushing? towards the engine.. I tried that but there is not enough room to work with..
