Performance Gain: Car starts
Complementary Modification: Replace steering wheel with upgraded model

The ignition switch on your Mercedes is coded to the vehicle, so you will have to reprogram the system for the computer to recognize it. The switch itself is easy to remove but you must first remove the steering wheel, steering column tube module and the trim around the gauge cluster. Please see our articles on these procedures for additional assistance. Remember before removing the airbag and steering wheel to disconnect the ground cable and wait 30 minutes for the electricity to dissipate from the system.
PLEASE NOTE: We no longer sell these parts. They are considered Theft Relevant Parts (TRP). You must now buy them through a MBZ dealership service dept where installation and programming is required by a MBZ authorized mechanic only.

Is fixing/replacing the authorization module a DIY?

BEVERLEY LYNNE HARRIS says:

Any suggestions for how to replace ignition switch in a low-km 2006 Smart Fortwo Passion Diesel?
Suddenly, three days ago, I went to start car after parking it 30 minutes earlier. First, key would only go in half way. (Something blocking key within the switch itself.). Kept jiggling it and eventually key went in…but would not turn. Tried repeatedly. Called MB service in Calgary. Alberta, (nearest, 165 km away). They had nothing to suggest over phone to remedy situation. They did suggest it could be a tumbler problem within the switch/lock itself.

So, got towed home – 40 km in opposite direction – to go to work.

Can tow car on flat bed to Calgary myself, but dreading repair costs. Hoping original keys can still be used.

Any advise/directions/recommendations?

I’m not sure if it’s my eis? I know it’s not my esl I have a 1999 c280 and when I insert my key it goes in and turns but it won’t click over to start. Is that my EIS? Or ?

How to program the new module?

Adam B says:

Just a heads up for anyone trying this, you do not have to take the steering wheel, airbag etc out.

Undo the T20 torx screws that hold the kick panel in above the pedals and you can reach in and grab it.

Disconnect any wires that are attached to the EIS and remove it from the car. You can do it in about 5 minutes.
