I’d just get a new one… it’s a lot of work to remove for an easily found
junk yard part.
I wrapped them, it peels off if needed.
Justin, thank you. the accordion-looking rubber thing surrounding the lever
fell inside, and I cannot pull it out or put it back in place… can I open
the shifter box or is it too much hassle, and if it is easy, would you
please tell me how to… thanks

Yes, but only as a whole assembly with all the switches.
