How To Change Replace Mercedes Benz Spark Plugs And Ignition Wires – Mercedes Benz S Class S500 W220

How To Change Replace Mercedes Benz Spark Plugs And Ignition Wires – Mercedes Benz S Class S500 W220

*** Gap spark plugs to 0.8mm (0.031 inches)
We all want to maximize performance and get the most power out of our Mercedes engines. None of us want to burn more fuel than we have to, or keep visiting the SMOG check station because your car won’t pass.
By changing your spark plugs and wires you can increase the service life of your engine, get great reliability, lower fuel consumption and reduce exhaust emissions for your vehicle.
Your engine will benefit from new wires in lots a ways. This means maximum voltage to your spark plugs, longer spark times resulting in optimum engine performance and better MPG ( Miles Per Gallon). Less chance for misfires. Better emissions, meaning more chances to pass a SMOG check.
Did you know that the Mercedes Benz S500 W220 takes 16 spark plugs? That’s two spark plugs per cylinder! When Mercedes Benz was designing the S500 engine, they were focusing on maximizing engine performance and efficiency. The engine in the Mercedes Benz S500 W220 is a 5.0 liter V8. If you ask anyone that knows about engines if it’s fuel efficient they would tell you that it’s not. However, that is not the case with the Mercedes Benz S Class. With a proper running engine, the Mercedes Benz S500 W220 can get great gas mileage. One of the ways to get the most out of your engine is to change/replace your spark plugs and wires and regular service times. This will make sure that you are getting the most reliability out of your engine. Which means you can get to where you need to go whether it’s to the local grocery store, or a 3,000 mile road trip across the country. In this video I will show you how to change/replace out the Spark plugs and Spark plug wires on your Mercedes Benz S500 W200.

Spark Plug Torque: 28 Nm
Spark Plug Gap: .8mm (Out of the box is .040 inches)

A word on gapping spark plugs:

“As a rule, a properly gapped spark plug will burn hot without being too wide at high rpm to cause a misfire. Ironically, the car manufacturer’s recommended spark plug gap is not optimal! The recommended spark plug gap is designed to be adequate for cold starting and smooth driving on a car that is in need of an engine tune up. If you drive your car normally and tune the engine regularly, you can increase the spark plug gap by about 0.010″ for better performance and better fuel economy. However, if you drive at full throttle most of the time, you should reduce the gap by about 0.010″ for better performance. The spark plug itself, and the residue that forms on it, would indicate whether the gap is too big or too small. A light brownish discoloration of the tip of to porcelain insulator indicates the proper operation of the spark plugs with the gap being ideal or close to ideal for the most recent engine speeds. Thus, to check the spark plug gap at high engine speeds, you’d need to run at full throttle and immediately turn the ignition off without allowing the engine to idle. But ultimately, you’d need to run your car on a dynamometer to find the best spark plug gap, and the right ignition timing for your engine.”

Excellent Video. Thank you !

Nice video. I do have a couple of questions and a couple of observations though. First of all, I am going to need to change my valve cover gaskets and spark plugs on my 2004 E500. It has leaked oil all over the coil pack and wires. What do you recommend to use to clean all of this oil off? Maybe brake clean? Second, your link to the Snap On spark plug socket did not work for me. Do you have a link for a good but less expensive spark plug socket on Amazon? Thank you. Tom

What are the torque setting for the plugs?

The most helpful video! Thanks!:)

Your video is very good and thorough and highly detail. I plan to fix up my mom 2001 S500 hand me down that needs tons of work, from gasket to plugs and air matic shocks. I rode this Mercedes when I was young now it's time to pay back.

When changing the spark plugs do i have to change the wires as well?

Great video … thanks A++

Thank you for posting this video! I'll be tackling the spark plugs on my W220 S500 this Saturday. Do you recommend applying die-electric grease? If so, how to with the spark plug wires? I've done it on the coils that go directly on the spark plug but not with wires.

i used the factory Bosch iridium they came pre gapped engine runs fine great in depth video

Maurice Searcy says:

Drop the anti-seize grease. It fucks with the grounding. I don't know. I had anti-seize and plugs gapped to far that blew my coil packs. One or the other or both. I have the V12, so my coil pack is about a thousand bucks. I have to be anal.

Maurice Searcy says:

Every Mercedes owner should have their spark plugs gapped. I have a workshop manual good to 2010 and it plainly says, "All Mercedes gas engines get an 0.8mm gap, fool." Now, all well and good, but what about the plugs that Mercedes takes off the shelf and stuffs in an engine? Are they gonna gap each plug during assembly? Oh, hell no. Those off the shelf plugs are factory gapped to 0.040 to 0.044 inches which is a bit over 0.8mm.

Hey everyone! Spring time is here and summer is right around the corner! So, if you have any long trips planned, then now is a good time to upgrade your ignition system with new spark plugs and wires! Let me know how this upgrade has improved the power, performance, efficiency, and MPG in your Mercedes S Class. Cheers!
