THE ESSENTIALS! says:

I'm waiting for the day when EV tech takes a collective dump and fucks off.

No Games says:

Gear reduction generators ran by wheels. Gear reduction means the genny won't absorb more power than it produces.

Daniel Miller says:

I think Scotty's opinion on this is pretty stupid. I've been driving a Chevy volt for almost a decade now. It only has a rated 38 mi range and I've done over 50 mi on a single charge. If you have to drive more than 100 miles to and from work each day then you need to live closer to your work. The average person drives less than 30 mi to and from work a day. You go home you charge you never really use gas unless you want to go on a long trip. Plug in hybrids are the answer to the ev problem at the moment. Smaller batteries are cheaper as well. I often go a whole year with only using a tank of gas or less. There are free car chargers near my house that I can use if I want to and I took my charger to work and charge there for free every single day I work. It's wonderful do you get free gasoline every time you go to work? I save so much money over every single person I know with a gasoline car or even traditional hybrid. But I wouldn't expect Scotty's opinions to evolve with age he's kind of stuck with what he grew up with. He still uses the word weight to refer to the viscosity of oil for some reason. That's miseducation. His opinion on these vehicles is based on bias not real life experience.

Ian Cirino says:

I'm against EVs all together. The mazda is more like a locomotive than an EV. Hopefully we can save the v8 ice

Nathan Schaefer says:

I think of it as replacing the transmission and other moving mass with a more efficient electric system. Electric motors are absurdly efficient, so are modern power rails, transmissions and the drive trains moving mass is inefficient. Plus you get the bonus of sorry bursts of peak power out of the electric motor, and the engine mostly runs at it's most efficient or highest power points as needed.

Michael Payne says:

Smoke and mirrors, they get points for an electric car on paper, but it can run on gas cross country.

Teardown Dan says:

Hybrid vehicles are mainly for urban commute where regenerative braking at stops and red lights along with not running the engine while stopped will easily make up for any additional conversion losses. Having the engine completely isolated from external variables makes it possible to tune it to constant-everything for absolute peak efficiency, which likely offsets conversion losses on the highway vs an ICE vehicle where the engine has to cope with ever-changing everything and hardly ever runs at its absolute peak efficiency.
BTW, I get about 170-200Wh/km on my mother's 2020 Bolt EV so 150km of range on a 35kWh battery seems like a pessimistic estimate to me, just don't drive like a maniac.

Tower of Resonance says:

In my opinion, in these times with war, impending and with climate change, Get yourself an old gas guzzler…because if you get stranded, have nowhere to recharge, you still have gas or diesel by your side

Thermal Reboot says:

I've been told that Diesel electric locomotives are more powerful and more efficient than a steam locomotive or a Diesel alone locomotive and one of the reasons for this, or so I've been told, is the engine runs at the most efficient RPMs. I've wondered why this technology hasn't been used for cars. I understand Scotty's concern about entropy, but there are other sources of entropy in ICE cars, could there be more benefits in this new Mazda setup?
