also, if the coil was bad and misfiring for a while the catalytic converter can get melted down and block exhaust flow..that will cause rough running, but it sounds more like ignition with the a/c causing a worse misfire

fupabox says:

it sounds unlikely, but I have seen new coils that are bad and die within a week.check the engine ground strap as well

oscarcr710ify says:

I replaced both ignition coils spark plugs and one coil cuz I pulled a wire plug and one was not working the car was good for two weeks now its miss firing again i was at a red light and my car turned off and if I have the ac on it miss fires worst

fupabox says:

the one between the 2 coils is a plug wire that should be firmly attached to the plug…carefully pull it off while the engine is running, if it makes no difference to the engine that coil or coil wire is dead

ARTISTICxBANG says:

My father has been having an issue with his Mazda 02, It starts to shake and such when turning it on and whatnot, he checked and he was curious to know if the small plug that goes into the engine (Right in the center of the coils) has to be lose? The cord reads 5DL 13541, and well.. it pops out easily. I apologize for the lack of detail, I suck with automotives, haha. Or is the issue with the coil? The check engine light pops up here and there, currently its not showing.

fupabox says:

it could be, is the check engine light on ?

Brandon Castro says:

My Mazda running rough, for a month but gradually getting worse. I’m going to try this today, but could this also be a fuel or injector problem. 75,000 miles.

glad to hear it..thanks for watching 🙂

FYI – Your trick of unplugging each coil to see which was faulty saved my sanity!!! I did a full tune up with new o2 sensors, plugs, wires, coils, oil, air and oil filters. My car ran beautifully for 20 minutes and then I had the mystery 300 code come in. Your video let me diagnose a bad brand new coil on 2/3. You rock. The Autozone guy said it was cylinder one because the printout said vacuum leak affecting one cylinder. You helped me not get screwed by doing it myself!!! Thanks

fupabox says:

are you sure you changed the correct coil ? unhook a plug wire then start the car..do this for each plug..you will only need the car to run for a few seconds with each plug wire off…the car should run worse with each wire removed..if you find one that when removed doesn’t make the car run worse, that is the bad one

i have a 2003 mazda protege 2.0 i have the same code, i changed the coil, checked the EGR and changed the spark plug. i still have the same problem still miss firing and stalling. can you please help me. thank you

fupabox says:

they are numbered 1-4 from the left to the right (looking at the engine from in front of the car) so plug #2 is the second from the left.. the coil for #2 is the left side coil and controls the 2 middle plugs #2 and #3

Joe Anderson says:

thanks, but which one is cylinder two? is it the second one from passenger side or the driver side?

fupabox says:

cylinder 2 misfire is generally the ignition coil on that cylinder, going bad

Joe Anderson says:

I got 03 protege lx, and the check engine light went on…cylinder 2 misfire…i changed the spark plugs…and the light went out for about 3 months…now it came back on with the same “cylinder 2 misfire” it starts and drives fine. What do i need to do to fix the problem?

vesmo says:

Awesome video! My girlfriend took her 2001 protege to the mechanic like 3 times and they couldn’t fix it. There was loss of power to the wheels and the car shook randomly after the engine heated up. I figured out which coil was the dead / dying one and swapped it out now it runs perfectly. Cheers!

fupabox says:

LOL… glad to help :)

Zack20008 says:

Let me tell you something!!! I tried your method and changed the coils. YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING AWESOME!!! My retard mechanic didn’t even know what the problem was. My 2002 Protege 5 runs like a dream now!!! I can’t thank you enough guys!!! I definitely subscribed to you!!!

desi arnaz says:

question for you. P0300 is a random misfire, as opposed to cylinder specific misfire codes p0301,302 ect.. each coil on this vehicle is responsibly for 2 cylinders, so if a coil is malfunctioning why is it registering as a random misfire instead of giving codes for the 2 cylinders it is misfiring on? my dads protege has the same code and sometimes misses so bad the Check engine light flashes, but i don’t understand why it won’t set cylinder specific codes for those misfires. thanks for any help

fupabox says:

to change the coils..no

Do you have to disconnect the battery?
