Hi There,
You video helps me do the job in about 4.5 hrs.
I only have to replance the three cavities connector.
Thank you very much, the truck is up and running.

Thanks for your comments.
The ball joint knuckle was so corroded I could not get it out. Which is why I went the other route. Also the drive shaft was stuck really well. I am not sure if I was missing the grease cap over the drive axle nut. The rear wheels have caps over the axle nuts. The mushrooming was from the gear puller I tried earlier. That was not on the video.
The mushrooming was not caused by the hammer. The thread sits farther back, so luckily no damage.

Chris Neims says:

good job getting the alt changed….sorry to correct you, but you went through alot more trouble than you needed to….next time take bolt completely out of ball joint knuckle….and do not beat on axle shaft with anything else other than a dead blow hammer…..that is how you mushroomed the end…..

janerikborge says:

Glad I could help.

Jack stands were used. Safety first!

When pulling the axle, I usually put the large nut back on so that I don’t mushroom the threaded end. Also using a punch in the center of the axle instead of a socket works well. I grease the heck outta the splines so that they don’t get stuck back in there when I put it back.

I assume you’re in Canada due to your pronunciation of “Mazda”

Jason Myre says:

thx for the vid.. There isn’t any hanes on these guys. Took me about that 6 hrs to do it. My axle wasn’t stuck either lucky since I am in Canada, Ontario. All done by hand tools and no pivot extensions..Even the top nut. I went from the side instead of beneath.

janerikborge says:

Depends on how corroded things are from winter driving where you are.

With a lot of problems about 8 hours.
6 hours for a backyard diy mechanic equipped with the right tools.
4 hours for a mechanic and a Mazda mechanic who has done a number of these could do it in 3 hours. Its learning all the little tricks that makes it easier a second or third time around.

Jason Myre says:

How long did it take you to do the whole job minus the explanations.
