How to Remove + Install/Replace Belt Tensioner on 2.5L engine for Mazda 6 3 CX5

DIY- How to: Remove + Install/Replace Belt Tensioner on 2.5L 4-cylinder engine 2014 to 2020 Mazda 6, 3, CX-5

When you accelerate does your car make a squeaking sound? If so, then most likely your belt tensioner has gone bad and the belt is now slipping making that sound or the bearing on the tension pulley has gone bad. You will see the part is all greasy due to the leaked oil in the shock and it will be covered in dirt that has stuck to the oil.

In this video, I’ll show you how to spot the bad belt tensioner, remove and install a new one.

While you have this area open, check out the water pump and see if it is showing any signs of leaking. See this video to see the early signs of water pump leaking and how to replace it.

Is it really neccessary to take off the water pump belt?

Thank you for putting this together. I just had a visit to the Mazda service with my 2018 CX5 GT AWD, and they said that the belt tensioner and the belt need to be replaced. My car has just 55k miles, I was not expecting this component to fail at that mileage. They are charging me $586.35 + tax for the parts and labor. Is that price reasonable? How much did you spend for the parts?

Thanks for the video. The upper nut is seized up for me. I tried PB blaster but basically almost rounded the nut using a wrench. I even tried six point 12mm socket but it's hard stuck. Any other ideas?

Thanks for the reply, I’ve watched them all. Appreciate the effort. So far no leaks at any of the points you noticed them, I’m just lucky I guess. With these videos I now have the confidence to tackle these jobs. Just need to wait till it cools off a little down here in the Deep South.

Thanks for putting this together, well done! How many miles are on this car? I am asking as a way to compare what maintenance you are doing at your mileage vs.my car, which h121k miles on it. Thanks again! Liked and subscribed.
