How to fix, unbrick and upgrade bricked Mazda infotainment system

In this video I show how I fixed my bricked Mazda infotainment system. The whole procedure is quite simple but you should know what you are doing. Don’t do it if you do not feel comfortable.

Obtain the following parts. I bought them here:
– USB programmer USB Programmer CH341A
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I1EU9LG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
– SOP16 IC Test Clip
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CYA9BTY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Link to the files you need.

Technically you can use any CH341A programmer. They are pretty much the same.

PROCEDURE

1) Remove the console. It might look a bit different on newer models but the guts are the same. You just need to get access to a circuit board holding the chip.
2) Connect USB programmer and install drivers. All the software you need is located here:

3) Connect the board to a computer. Make sure you use right pins. The program should indicate if the board is connected properly.
4) Read the chip, hit “verify” button to make sure it was read properly and save a copy of your .bin file to be safe.
5) Change byte at offset 0x0010000 from FF to 00 and save the file to a computer
6) Hit “erase” to clean the chip.
7) Open your modified .bin saved file and hit “program” botton. Wait a few minutes till it finishes programming.
8) Disconnect the board and plug it back into your car.
9) Make sure you have the upgrade .UP files on a USB drive;
10) Turn the car ON. It should start booting up and produce an error.
11) Turn the car OFF, insert USB drive and upgrade process should continue.
12) Pat yourself on a shoulder and like this video. You are the best!

Thank you so much!! I just followed this guide and it worked perfect! All I had to do was hardwire the SOP16 to my SOP8 on the USB programmer and it all worked! Thank you!!

I have to say, this video absolutely saved me. I updated my girlfriend's car with the failsafe package and then realized I didn't transfer over the reinstallation package onto the same flash drive. I transferred the file and when I went to turn on her car it was black. I bricked it. I did a ton of research into how to fix it but this video really was the 'end all be all'. She's so happy to have carplay and I'm so happy that I didn't have to buy her a new CMU unit. I also didn't have an SOP16 to SOP8 adapter but just used jumper pins directly into the CH341A adapter and it worked like a charm. Seriously, thank you for going out of your way to make this video, it was extremely helpful.

Best,
Zach

Hi Sir, I have some problem like yours. And like you said, i go do the dealer and they suggest to change it amount 1k $, and i have some option i want to change the headunit Tomiko brands. Don't know its Japan or China products. But after seen this video, i want to try to fix it. But i have some questions.
1. Is there the brand of the headunit same with my Mazda CX5 2015 Facelift GT Ver. I'm afraid your headunit and my headunit is different.
2. After we fix it, all the features mazda have like automatic brake system completely works?

Hope you reply this msg before i go to repair by myself. And Pray me Luck. 😀

Thank you for making this video. It was extremely helpful and worked like a charm. Very easy to follow. Can’t believe Mazda declares these as bricked when it’s such a simple fix.

Here are the Amazon links (US) he uses in the video:

USB Programmer – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I1EU9LG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

SOP16 Test Clip – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CYA9BTY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Brian Lee says:

Hi, on the flashdrive after corrupting the chip, did you have just the "reinstall" .UP file or the "failsafe" one or both? Thank you. I will be trying this out this week because I just bricked my CMU trying to update the firmware 🙁

Mauro Ferrari says:

Its been more than a week since I bricked my cmu.
Today I got a second clip (first one had misaligned pins) and I cant get the software to detect the chip nor read any bytes of data.
2nd clip wont work either, Im sure Im doing everything as shown on the video.
What could be wrong? Dead chip? Defective USB programmer? Im lost.

Sometimes I get $00 instead of $FF when I move the clip a bit, but nothing close to autodetecting model or memory when hit detect. Also tried different versions of the software with no luck.

Frank Vasquez says:

Thank you so much for this @ride & live! One thing I will add is that if you get a test clip that does not come with the SOP16 to SOP8 adapter you can hardwire the ribbon harness into the c341 adapter. You only use pins 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, & 16. They should connect to 7, 8, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6 respectively. What helped me was googling SOP16 layout and SOP8 layout to cross reference the two.

Make sure you’re following the pin layout diagram referenced on the bottom left in the c341 program. I noticed different versions of this program changed which way the chip is oriented.

Douglas Hamner says:

I have an issue where it continues to say system failure and asks for me to insert installation media, just like what it showed when you reset the memory chip. When I insert the thumbdrive it will not proceed past 2% and will reboot. Will this method also fix this issue?

Alexandr Shydlyk says:

him thank you for this awesome maual. Just yesterday successfully unbricked my cx-5 CMU after failed installation (damned USB stick). SOP16 to SOP8 connector was included in USB Programmer CH341A (how to connect pins you can check here (https://images.ua.prom.st/597683150_w640_h640_597683150.jpg))
Now I have challenges:
1) how to reprogram dashboard from EN to RU
2) how to update SD card with maps (from US to EU)
3) how to reprogram FM module from US (200 Khz) to EU (100 KHz) for BOSE tuner

My friend, thank you for this video, but I want to know what kind of adapter from 16pin to 8pin. because i can not find in amazon or aliexpress.

Pisticiuc iustin says:

Very good explanation.
Do you know if I cand programming the chip MT29F8G08ABACA with this ch341a programmer? The chip is from Uconnect 5 inch from fiat Tipo. I wanted to make an update of software and has been blocked at updated screen. I am looking for something to repair and I saw your video but I don't know if it's compatible the programmer with chip.
Thank you!
