The rotary engine is a type of internal combustion engine that was developed by Felix Wankel and used by Mazda in several of their vehicles. Mazda has a long history of using rotary engines, with their most famous rotary-powered car being the Mazda RX-7.

Mazda’s first rotary-powered car was the Mazda Cosmo Sport, introduced in 1967. Over the years, Mazda produced several generations of the RX-7, which became an iconic sports car. The RX-8 was another notable model that featured a rotary engine. However, Mazda discontinued the RX-8 in 2012 due to challenges in meeting emission standards and low sales volumes.

While Mazda has not released a new rotary-powered car since the RX-8, they have shown a continued interest in the technology. In recent years, Mazda has unveiled concept cars, such as the Mazda RX-VISION, which showcase the company’s vision for future rotary-powered vehicles. These concepts suggest that Mazda is exploring ways to overcome the challenges associated with rotary engines, such as improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

It’s worth noting that as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Mazda has not announced any specific plans for a new production rotary-powered car. However, the company has expressed a commitment to the development of innovative technologies and has not ruled out the possibility of a future rotary engine-powered vehicle.
