Hello neighbors, it’s Brad here at etrailer. And today we’re taking a look at installing the CURT Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2024 Mazda CX-90. And this is what your hitch is gonna look like when it’s installed. And it does remove the hitch cover from the factory. But overall this has a really clean look to it. It’s gonna be a hidden cross tube, which means the only thing that you’re gonna see exposed is gonna be the 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening.

And that’s a really nice thing, you get all the usability of the hitch, but a nice clean OEM look. Now, as I mentioned, a 2 inch by 2 inch receiver tube opening is what this hitch has, which is gonna be awesome. It’s kind of the standard size for hitches. So that means when it comes to bike racks, cargo carriers, or ball mounts, you’re gonna have tons of options available. And all of those are gonna stay in place with a 5/8 pin and clip.

This is not included with the hitch. A lot of times your accessories will have them included. That’s something to look for when choosing those. But if not, you can always pick up a locking pin and clip, which I really like, especially if you plan on leaving your accessories on. You can lock that in place and know that no one’s gonna walk away with your accessories.

The weld style safety chain loop is going to make sure that you can get your safety chains attached nice and easily. So standard S hook or even a larger clevis style is gonna go on with no problem. And speaking of towing, you’re gonna want to adhere to the weight capacities of this hitch, which these are pretty decent. Your gross trailer weight rating is gonna come in at 5,000 pounds. And that’s gonna be the weight of the trailer, plus the accessories loaded onto it.

You also have a tongue weight rating of 500 pounds, which is the downward pressure that’s put on the inside of the receiver, and that’s gonna be your suspended accessories, like your bike racks or cargo carriers that are self suspending off of the hitch. Now it can be used with a weight distribution hitch, but the numbers are gonna stay the same at 5,500. Now you do wanna make sure that you check the vehicle’s owner’s manual to see what is capable of towing, and then compare that with not only the hitch but any of the components that you’re using. That way you stay safe while towing your trailer. Now from the side profile, this does sit really nice. You’re not gonna hit your shins on it as you walk past your vehicle. And from the center of the hitch pin holder, the furthest point of the rear fascia, we’re looking at about 3 inches. So I really don’t worry too much for folding accessories like cargo carriers or bike racks. As they go in the stowed position, they’re probably not gonna make contact with your fascia. Just know that you may or may not be able to open up your rear hatch with those in that position. But not to worry, you can lower those down and still gain access. Now as far as ground clearance goes, from the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground, we’re coming in at 15 inches. And that’s gonna be really important, especially when choosing a ball mount. You can measure the coupler of your trailer, compare that with the 15 inches, and then determine the rise are drop necessary to get your trailer nice and level. At this ground clearance, you probably don’t have to worry too much about bottoming your accessories out, but keep in mind as you go up very steep inclines or large bumps, those are gonna want to tilt towards the ground, so you don’t want your accessories to bottom out. So just keep that in mind when going up some really steep hills with those accessories loaded up. As far as the installation goes, this one isn’t too terribly bad. You’re gonna be removing a few plastic pieces. You do have to enlarge a part of the frame, it’s just minor, kind of, drilling, or even just using a burr bit to widen that out to get your hardware in place. And there’s a few little extra steps that you’re gonna need to get that fascia panel put back up. But overall, this isn’t too terribly hard. You can probably knock this out in I would say about, let’s give it half an hour to 45 minutes. You might want to grab an extra set of hands to help raise that up, but overall it’s not too bad. So let’s take a look at that installation. I’m gonna walk you through step by step to make sure you get it installed. To begin an installation, we’re gonna head underneath the rear fascia where we’re gonna find some plastic push pins. And we have some on the outer edge. We’re gonna not touch t
