PTU Service (Drill & Tap) Lincoln MKX / Ford Edge

PTU Service (Drill & Tap) Lincoln MKX / Ford Edge

How to drill and tap your Ford PTU so that it can be serviced. I am 17,000 miles into this repair and it saved me a lot of money.
The repair procedure should be the same on all Lincoln MKX and Ford Edge models from 2007-2014, it should also work on all wheel drive Explorer and Taurus models.
#PTU Leak #MKX #EDGE #DIY #Lincoln #Explorer
What you need:
7/16” drill bit
1/4” NPT tap
1/4” male NPT plug
12 oz. of full synthetic 75W-140 gear oil

Very helpful video. Where are you located?I would like you do same for my 2016 Explorer

@AB-gi9gu says:

nice vid, thanks. You can put grease on the end of your tap and run it a few threads at a time and back out as you go and clean off all of the chips and apply new grease.

Would these be the same as a 2016 ford explorer 3.5 awd??

@TheMetalmachine467 says:

Thank God my 2021 explorer has a regular diff in front not like the 2019 and older that has a ptu also
You can also use a vacuum pump to suck out the oil

@mikedickman6369 says:

AWESOME! Wish I had the guts to do that. I have a 2019 Explorer and took it to the dealer for this service at 50K and they charged me $100.

After rendering the PTU fully servicable consider modding the washer fluid low circuit to serve as a low coolant alert: https://youtu.be/KTSvdINGsmI

Pretty sure the escape is the same too.

@ryanamey5024 says:

Is this still a viable fix 11 months later? How often are you servicing? Have you had any leaks on the drain plug?
