How to drill and tap your Ford PTU so that it can be serviced. I am 17,000 miles into this repair and it saved me a lot of money.
The repair procedure should be the same on all Lincoln MKX and Ford Edge models from 2007-2014, it should also work on all wheel drive Explorer and Taurus models.
#PTU Leak #MKX #EDGE #DIY #Lincoln #Explorer
What you need:
7/16” drill bit
1/4” NPT tap
1/4” male NPT plug
12 oz. of full synthetic 75W-140 gear oil

Great video. Your layout of drill position was clear and concise.
What happiness with your starliner
Very helpful video. Where are you located?I would like you do same for my 2016 Explorer
nice vid, thanks. You can put grease on the end of your tap and run it a few threads at a time and back out as you go and clean off all of the chips and apply new grease.
Would these be the same as a 2016 ford explorer 3.5 awd??
Thank God my 2021 explorer has a regular diff in front not like the 2019 and older that has a ptu also
You can also use a vacuum pump to suck out the oil
AWESOME! Wish I had the guts to do that. I have a 2019 Explorer and took it to the dealer for this service at 50K and they charged me $100.
09-12 Ford Flex AWD as well
Ford should have a total recall. bankrupt them.
great video
Thanks for the help , I have a 2013 ford flex and I'm going to try to drill a hole in mine, it got 140000 miles I think it's time
Buy a drain plug that has a magnet on the end
"That was easy!!" Sure was. Great vid and Great ending!!
After rendering the PTU fully servicable consider modding the washer fluid low circuit to serve as a low coolant alert: https://youtu.be/KTSvdINGsmI
Thanks for showing this.
excellent mod
Didn't mean to add the extra ( video Im ) n my last comment guess i should have read it before i sent it
Better than the first video i seen on this ( the Other video I'm video Im talking about wasn't 1 of urs ) glad u showed What the dirty oil looked like and more info thank u
Great!!! Thank you
Nice, thanks for the vid. I am super jealous of your garage!
Pretty sure the escape is the same too.
Is this still a viable fix 11 months later? How often are you servicing? Have you had any leaks on the drain plug?
