This video will show you how I replaced the right (driver’s side) CV axle on a 2002 Toyota Avalon with 155,000 miles. The replacement axle is manufactured by Cardone. The procedure involved in replacing this axle can be used on other Toyota vehicles such as the Camry, Solara, Sienna, Highlander and Lexus ES and RX. At slow speeds the axle was making a ticking sound indicating a loose fit or wear between the cv axle bearings and bear cage. In addition, a mild wheel vibration was noticed at speeds above 40 mph; the wheels were in balance and the tires were not out-of-round. At a minimum you’ll need a 30 mm 1/2″ socket with a breaker bar to detach the axle from the steering knuckle; otherwise, a metric socket set, a chisel and hammer is all that is needed to perform this repair. Some techs or mechanics perform this replacement by swinging the steering knuckle away from axle by disconnecting the lower ball joint. I use to do it that way. Since I do not have a lift, the car will require more ground clearance and I’ll have to get on the ground on my back to detach the ball joint. Some also argue that detaching the suspension strut from the knuckle will disturb the wheel alignment. This does not seem to be a problem or issue with Toyota McPherson strut suspensions.
Vehicles that is CV axle can be used with:
LEXUS ES300 1997-2001
TOYOTA AVALON 1997-2004
TOYOTA CAMRY 1997-2001
TOYOTA SIENNA 1998-2003
TOYOTA SOLARA 1999-2003

According to the official Toyota Corolla workshop manual, the transmission fluid must be drained before removing the axle shaft. On YouTube, some do this, others do not. It is probably just a precaution in case there is already a leak in place, which would become abundant once the axle shaft is removed, which is probably what happened in the video.
I’ve seen a few videos where it’s said a little grease on the ring that’s turned with the opening up makes it easy to slide in without the hammer, is this true?
Instead of a chisel a small tire iron worked easily
You got the sds bit to hit the spindle. why not just use the sds drill to free it up?
WARNING: YOUR VEHICLE WILL NOT BE THIS CLEAN UNDERNEATH I PROMISE
he said back into the engine…lol
The best cv axle video I have seen. I specially liked your explanation about the retaining clip.
After they replaced my axle ( my part ) about a month later I noticed a hard knock when shifting onto reverse after the car sits for an hour or so.. But after the first one it won't do it, until you let it sit for a while.. Went under the car today and it seems like the sound is coming from the axle.. is that knock possible from an axle ?
Thank you always like watching these videos for the confidence boost before I tear it apart
Thanks for the video. Just did the drivers side CV on my 2004 Avalon. I had a hard time prying out the old CV axle. An 18" pry bar did nothing. Tried hammering too. Ultimately, it came out really easy once i pried on 2 points. There was enough room to get a small pry bar on the top, and a bigger one on the bottom. I then alternated pressure top and bottom and after an hour of no luck prying in one location, it popped really easily with 2 points of pressure.
Thanks for the video, will be attempting tomorrow you made this look easy
Good video stright forward
Why dielectric grease on the lip of axle where rides on the seal?
U r friking awesome. Thank you.
I want to give you a big shout out and thank you for your video. I unfortunately had to do this job on my RX350 driver side 2 years ago and this past weekend my wife and I had the same one blow out on us. The knuckle exploded. Because of you I was able to have this entirel job done in about an hour because I thought you had to take the entire hub off. I had this done with no stress in a super market parking lot. Thank you again Sir. God bless
Wow you made that look so easy! Thanks for sharing
so i drive a 2008 ES350, will my transmission fluid drain a bit like this one did? and if so, how do i go about filling it back up if my transmission is sealed?
How long did this job take?
I have a 2000 avalon xls and I have to do both front axles in addition to all my pads and rotors.. My axles click when making sharp turns at slow speed but that's about it.. Very informative video. Thanks for the help.
Man were you lucky. Both of my axles came out hard. Bearings were hung up on the carrier bearing on the passenger side and they're hung up on the wheel bearing on the driver's side. A real pain.
If the inner part of the axle pops in and out slightly, is it because i didn't sit it right.
God this looked so easy before I did the work, only took me about 7 hours
Hey guys, what’s the better aftermarket brands options that you can tell for CV axles, for Toyota/Lexus ??
