My rear brake caliper froze on my 2006 Lexus GS300. I bought the Hawk HPS Street Sport Brake Pads and Centric Premium Rotors from Tirerack and the rear brake…

You are my new best friend!

homeaddition says:

Thank you :)

homeaddition says:

You do not have to remove the brake hose to swap out the rotor on any car that I ever took apart. #cartips

homeaddition says:

I don’t think you compressed the piston enough. #cartips

dvspot says:

I compress the caliper piston and installed one pad, but the pad that place outside of the rotor, won’t fit. Please help?

homeaddition says:

I’m going to be posting a new and more detailed Brake Job Tutorial soon. It will include how to check for frozen brake calipers, how to remove calipers, rotors, pads, brake lines, and also how to bleed brakes.

Saurabh N says:

do you have to remove the brake hose to change the rotor or can you just pop off the caliper?

Noeh250 says:

nice video, fast and efficient!

homeaddition says:

Just USED MY OWN VIDEO to do my brakes again 🙂 I’m MAKING A NEW HD 1080p video that I shot with a Canon Rebel T3i. STAY TUNED for the Complete Brake Job but in stunning High definition. I’ll be Posting it VERY SOON. #cars #diycars #diymechanic #brakes

wayne21williams says:

Great video man!!! I’m going to need to do my front pads and rotors on my next Oil change I just don’t see myself paying $600 to have the stealership do any more of the work i can easily do in my garage!!

homeaddition says:

Calipers do not have to be changed in pairs. Brake pads make sense because they wear, but you actually do not have to change your brake pads at the same time you change your rotors or calipers, if they are still good. It’s common knowledge from #racing.

JixerGer says:

Hi, you should also have emphasised that calipers and pads should always be replaced as a pair on one axle. This was not apparent in your video. Good trick with the bag though!

homeaddition says:

I used to think that it must be complicated because dealers and garages charge so much. Turns out that it’s pretty simple.

jdavis234 says:

Thanks. I feel stupid that I just paid to have this done!

homeaddition says:

It’s rated for a lot more weight than my Lexus and worked flawlessly for years.

homeaddition says:

Thanks, if I ever take it apart again, I’ll keep that in mind.

Frank DiGioia says:

Not bad, but you should have removed the grommet before you attempt to remove the rotor, to loosen the parking brake adjustment. The parking brake shoes often wedge into the rotor during its removal, which can fight you .The force of the screws that remove the rotor are enough to ruin the shoes or the springs that hold them in place.Turn the grommet hole in the rotor to the 6:00 position. Remove grommet and you will see a small adjuster wheel.Turn it with a screwdriver and the shoes loosen.

mrjost55 says:

That was one of the sketchiest hydraulics jacks I’ve ever seen. Please get a set of sturdy jack stands, so you don’t kill yourself and/or damage your vehicle.

homeaddition says:

Thanks! Doing the #brakes on a car sounds a lot more complicated than it really is. Take it one step at a time like I did and everything should work out great. #Lexus

Dandthings says:

Great video, thanks for posting it!

homeaddition says:

Hey Every BODY 🙂 Check out my Lexus Street Race video that I posted on 10/14/2012. It’s between a 2006 Lexus GS300 and a 2012 Lexus ES350! hot and very surprising at the end!

homeaddition says:

I’m sure it’s pretty similar to this. As long as you have disc brakes this procedure should work on practically any car.

antidescent says:

does this also apply to a 06 gx470? thanks

homeaddition says:

I made the mistake of buying my caliper from a place like Autozone and they never told me that the brake calipers are not painted or coated. So after a few weeks I developed surface rust. Surface rust is not pretty but it’s nothing to worry about. Anyways, I recommend you bleed your brakes, you will need two people. 1 to unscrew the bleeder valve while the other depresses the brakes at the same time.

Daniel Bohannon says:

Great Video! Thanks this helped quite a bit especially for the plastic bag trick. Did you have to bleed the brakes at all after using the plastic bag to cause the suction?

I have a 03 GS300 that the front passenger side has a frozen piston. I am going to have to replace my Caliper tomorrow. Hopefully OEM isnt $300+ like I have seen on the forums. Not sure if I trust Autozone’s Brake Caliper 🙁

homeaddition says:

Oh you are right about the paint! Now I have to wait for the weather to get a bit cooler and I’m going to paint all 4 calipers black. Most likely it will be on YouTube 😛

larrydav1d says:

Much more complicated than I thought. You should’ve painted your calipers while they were off

homeaddition says:

Yeah, this was my first time doing brakes on my Lexus.

Bulgdoom says:

Wow those brake pad slider pins were all rusted up, no wonder it was stuck. Use anti-seize next time

homeaddition says:

No problems 😉

soldier93rus says:

Thanx for the help!

homeaddition says:

I always stay clear of the car and I make sure that the jack is stable. But I see your point too.

bludika says:

dude don’t work on a car only supported by a jack, use jack stands

homeaddition says:

You’re welcome 🙂 To be honest I love when my videos help people, it kind of makes me feel good to help people out. You should subscribe to my channel for future Lexus tips and tricks.

My brother-in law had some in his tool kit. I keep a few plastic bins in my garage and they are loaded with various screws. You can also pick some up at home depot or lowes.

Mp0wer says:

I was pulling my hair out trying to take the rotors off, I had no idea about the 8mm screws, thanks so much, curious where you got those 8mm screws?

homeaddition says:

I like them. No problems so far. I will probably change my rear rotors to Centric when it’s time.

bella21167 says:

good video . should have shown the brake bleed . the bag trick was sweet . I am a ase master and have 15 years experience and i never saw that move . im gonna try it !

homeaddition says:

My brother in law helped me bleed them the standard way. One person presses the brake down while the other person loosens the bleeder valve to let air out. We did this multiple times per brake caliper. It worked perfectly for me.

Bin Ngo says:

How do you bleed your brakes after you changed the caliper? I do know that on the lexus gs350 you cannot pump the brake paddle like a normal car.

homeaddition says:

Update: My front right caliper was frozen also! I had to change it out, I’ll post a video soon.

urkkik5 says:

This was excellent Job.
Thanks Man.
:-)

Neil4Speed says:

Great Video!

homeaddition says:

@timinator2000 I never heard of that, and you can plainly see mine @1:44 It does say only use dot 3 Toyota brake fluid on the cap.

timinator2000 says:

I also have a 2006 GS 300. I changed my pads last fall and had to ask a lexus mechanic where the brake fluid reservoir was. He explained that mine is a sealed system and doesn’t have a reservoir. If we have the same model I wonder why you have one and mine didn’t….

very good diy, great job!
