Nice videos, I hate how vehicles after like 1994 are hell when it comes to electronics and wiring. My Jeep Cherokee windows won’t come down except for Driver Side and I’ve checked all the wires, tried grounding to the door on raw metal, etc..etc.. the only way i can roll down my windows is with some homeade wire with gator clips to my battery.

I’ve just drilled a hole in the door panel and hung the wires out and crimped on some ring terminals. 😛

Let me know if you have any ideas for me.

Jim Mc says:

Those switches are something like $300.

Good call. Thanks

Brian, if you use a jewlers loupe you can see a break in the solder quickly.

Roly Wiener says:

I know the modern cars use micro switches and prolly use a digital pulse uu to a “brain box” I am lost what to so with this scenario except get the exact same swith from breakers yard. On the older stuff you just get a switch that fits the hole, there are standard sizes and look at a wiring diagram to mate up the wires with a block connector..just a simple screw down block connector.

Roly Wiener says:

thanks for this good tip..

Roly Wiener says:

Woops lost my spectacles should be ” some switches use a realtively heavy ampage.”

Roly Wiener says:

Had similar probs with Porsche swithes whic are crap. Solution go to breakers yard and find substitute..take out the switch and the connector behind it..cut the wires about 100mm back on the loom side. So you got a switch and the connector and the wires. Aome lihes our are heavy duty 5 amp switches so make sure the wires are the same thickness. TRW make the best OE switches here in the EUR.

I’m so proud of you! Much love!

You’re welcome- I’m proud of you for finding the solution!

Awesome video! I have a 2000 RX 300 and I’ve had this window switch problem for about a year now. Took it to the dealership and they told me it would cost $800 just for the parts to fix it. I have no automotive knowledge whatsoever, but I popped the electrical board out, resoldered the connectors, had the window re-learn the function and it works great! Took about 30 minutes and I didn’t even need help from my husband!

briansmobile1 says:

You’re welcome. REMEMBER these have to “learn” Look at CURBECK’s comment on that. They basically have to go all the way up and down before working/responding properly.

Hey, you deserve a medal for taking the time to post this. I’ve looked around online the last couple days to diagnose this problem and your video perfectly matches my malfunction (and the solution). I now have enough info to tackle this baby in the next day or so. I’m a fairly experienced solderer so I think I can do it & I’m totally with you on the challenge & its “got to be fixed” before replaced mentality. Many thanks!

briansmobile1 says:

Your welcome- thank YOU!

Thanks. I LIKE IT.

It’s a quote from the movie “Bubble Boy” You’re welcome- good for you!

“Come get shiny on my knife, ese!!” Where did that come from? I made my best bud’s mother very happy yesterday, on Mother’s Day, by fixing her RX300 window, which hasn’t worked in over 3 years thanks to your video! Thanks so much.

plunger1212 says:

Good video! You could use a hot air solder unit. Under $60 on ebay. Some people put stuff in the oven to get the solder to melt and resolder.

hateercenor says:

Design fail. Horrible ides to use capacitance based switches in this environment.

briansmobile1 says:

Thanks- it seems things really aren’t made to last at all. When I look at all the plastic on cars I wonder if/how/why would anyone in the future restore them?

beefystik says:

Man, I love this video. I have a Rav4, and it’s the first car I’ve owned in years with power windows. I normally avoid power windows because, well, they break, but I couldn’t pass on the deal. Thanks for this, I won’t be dropping $300 on a switch board should this happen.

SYNTHETICDARKNESSRX8 says:

Good job! I’ve actually had to redo a few RX8 HVAC units cause of cracking. Things nowadays are done like crap, and seeing it in factories, it’s a wonder everything works at all lol.

MrLeonard55 says:

Thanks for the video. I had mine do the same thing on my F-150.

Nice try Brain …good job

ncrdisabled Submarine vet says:

At 320 bucks I would hope you could get one at a junk yard . I know it a crap shoot getting used parts at a junk yard but maybe it was a car the person never wanted the window down. I got lucks for some parts off a 2003 Montana . It had over 100k miles but certain parts looked like that had never been used.

briansmobile1 says:

Less landfill filler because you are doing the purest and best form of recycling AND more disposable income that you don’t have to spend on parts. It’s a total win!

briansmobile1 says:

It’s automatic! = D

AlchemistLair says:

We have become such a “Remove and Replace” society. I love making things work again without just scrapping and buying replacement parts.
Thank for the videos!

It was those pins at the green board “bagillion pin connector” as shown at 0:54

I’m happy you are educated! All I do everyday is solve problems for people in complex systems. I HAVE to know what’s going on if something isn’t working. I study history and politics not because I like it, but because I’m curious why things are so broken. Dr. Paul is pretty sharp he’s been consistently correct on so many things on the Fed Res, Drug war, Oil wars, and Economy. He’s a real champion for personal freedom and national peace time. What’s not to love?
