No worries bud

jenson shephard says:

before removing the cylinder-head ,i also drain the water coolant system as
preventing the water filling up the cylinders and mixing with the engine
oil. the best gasket set to use is the 3 stage MLS K-series ,which icludes
the stretch bolts and all the other gaskets, from ebay at a coat 0f under
£50.

Andrew Jones says:

Excellent article, though personally I never sandpaper heads! (where does
the grit & chippings go?) Use a proper engineers straight edge- not a steel
ruler- if you can afford one. I now use the XPart upgraded gasket kit for
the K2- pricy but the ultimate fix. Latest XPart MLS gasket, higher tensile
strength bolts plus revised torque angles- plus stronger oil rail. See
full instructions and photos on my blog http://awj99.wordpress.com/ goes
well with this & shows tools and part numbers you need. Sad to see the grey
mix of water & oil in the engine- a pain to clean out.

MakINE16V says:

This is known in spain as “mostaza” jaja, i suffered this with my 416si,
the cost was expensive. anyway i repaired it. i remember when i began to
see water through the scapement and still it was working jaja , despite of
this was an incredible car

hp11208 says:

nice,u went to schoolfor this rigth

honda integra says:

????????????

andyfooty says:

im about to do mine and like this one the gasket seems to small, how can
the gasket work if it doesnt fit closer to the piston bore? someone pls
explain

Andi Sadler says:

I agree with this comment 100%. I also have the zr160vvc and mines highly
modified. Its on 71600 and still on original gasket. I admit i do wrack the
car but it also gets alot of tlc, regular oil and coolant service etc. If
you paid alot for a car then youd look after it wouldnt you? makes alot of
sense to me, and then theres no reason at all why you should get HGF. They
dont all do that!.

TheRealSparkhound says:

There is a workshop tool for clamping the liners in place with the head
off. These are necessary for rotating the crank without disturbing the
liners, I’ve used them many times. The golden rule is don’t turn the crank
with the head off UNLESS cylinder liner clamps are used.

sean mcgeown says:

as liam said never turn a k series over by the crank. but i didnt know
about the bearing caps could drop in to the sump??? i do know it can
disturb the liners and they could move. this is when you fuck things up big
time. i have a zr myself but the gasket hasnt went on it. on 79000 miles. k
series is a great engine if you look after them and dont rev them hard when
cold

TheRealSparkhound says:

Not sure about this video… some lack of understanding of the K series
engine here. The long bolts don’t hold the crankshaft in the crank case so
you don’t have to worry about caps falling into the sump if the crank is
turned with the head off. The real danger is that turning the crank could
cause displacement of the cylinder liners as the pistons move because the
cylinder head holds the cylinder liners in place.

badslabber the bastard says:

LIKED THIS LOADS ,can you show how to space the rockets ?

andyfooty says:

i mean the holes round the bore, why are they so big there is little fixing
the gasket to the block surely?

smilie120 says:

Almost done with my head gasket, just the inlet and exhaust manifold, and
the timing belt and a few other bits and bobs should be done in a few days
🙂

Peter Mc Conville says:

yo you know your onions as we say here in dublin i have a question how do
you change the thermostat in the rover 45 2001 look forward to seeing the
vid

Liamautomechanic says:

no its irish.

Liamautomechanic says:

when we remove a head on a rover, we dont move the crank, until the head is
refitted, thats the golden rule.

Liamautomechanic says:

@hp11208 its best to be thrown in at the deep end. it will make you or
break you. best way to learn.i must visit some of the old team. before
theres none left. some are now in their 80s.

TheRealSparkhound says:

It is correct though that the crank should not be turned unless a set of
cylinder liner clamps are used. These are tubes of about the same depth as
the head that are fitted to the block with the old long bolts. They
effectively clamp the liners in place allowing rotation of the crank while
the head is removed.

MultiSmaka says:

i changed gasket on mg zr 1.4 k series, old one was payen gasket,i got new
mls gasket plus new bolts. head and block is good-no wraps. but after
installation coolant leaking out at exhaust manifold side. how is tat
possible? bad gasket? tightened 20nm,180deg+180deg. so i’m getting payen
with rubber seals, mls failed on this one.

TheRealSparkhound says:

Another thing that I would worried about is the method of measuring the
possible warping of the head. Would be much better to use a proper
engineer’s straight edge and feeler gauges.

Liamautomechanic says:

naw shes is still going strong. on the road every day, from donegal to
derry, never missed a bar.grand wee car.

Phil Hermida says:

If NASA can get a rover on the moon…. Why cant my Rover make it to Tesco?

Liamautomechanic says:

@hp11208 it would drive you to drink. lol.

hp11208 says:

@Liamautomechanic I like the old mechanic teachings thats how all of us
learnt when there was no schools for automotives.

Liamautomechanic says:

you have to make sure there is no wraps on the block, or cylinder head, and
its a good idea to use the modified gasket, u see in the video.its unlikely
to be a faulty gasket, you could also drain the coolant, then loosen and re
tighten the cylinder head bolts, and pour in some wonder weld to seal the
gasket.refill coolant, its a shot in the dark. good luck.

hp11208 says:

LOL.i like that saying talk the talk but cant walk the walk,u always find
that people who learn in a shop or back yard know more than who went to
school they migth have a certificate to show that all but they dont know
the old school redneck back yard type of skill.

darwin64614 says:

Can I ask how do you get the head off without disturbing the wet cylinder
linings. Renault used the same wet liners on the 5 and they weer a sod to
get off.

Liamautomechanic says:

if its all down hill to TESCO, the rover should make it.

hp11208 says:

@Liamautomechanic Wow they will say to you,u have come far lad lol.

atrix blue says:

used to work ina motorfactors we sold these time and time again headsaver
MLS BGA headset and upgrade oil rail and dowels. allot of people neglected
to fit the saver if the head hadnt been skimmed the saver is designed so
the rings seals of the gasket didnt cut into the cyl head and back to
square 1 with HGF, to stop the crank moving when cleaning the cyl out use a
k series liner clamp, and lock the flywheel at gearbox end.

Liamautomechanic says:

well i done a few head gaskets on the renault,4s, 5s and the 12,s wet
liners. in the late 1970s and early 80s, just lift the head off, just make
sure that all 4 pistons are 1/2 way down, all level. and dont move the crank
shaft when the head is off, easy enough, have car in neutral and lead off
batery.

smilie120 says:

Don’t people thread the head bolts back in when the heads off to stop the
crank from dropping? Also would locking the flywheel stop this as the crank
can’t move?

Liamautomechanic says:

@hp11208 well the old dog for the hard road. and the pup for the path. as
we say in ireland. dont write off the red necks.LOL.
