Power Steering kaputt – Repair debacle ? Land Rover Discovery

The power steering of our 2006 Land Rover Discovery 3 with the TDV6 Diesel makes a whining noise and leaks oil. We replace the power steering pump and hoses. We thought that this will be simple – we thought wrong…

My god, how many logs for the stove!!!

@eurosatwiz says:

is there no end to the repairs on this car

@robmurg says:

That is a boring-head and-a-half, move over Stefan Gotteswinter!

Hi Chis, I just did my petrol fuel pump flange and coolant pipes on my 2010RRS. After I mounted the thick coolant hoe, I was wondering shall I lightly grease the pipe before connectit to the thermometer house otherwise next time it will be again very difficult to take off. Lithium grease maybe? Whats your take on it? Do you also grease on any connection with an o ring? And all the screws you put a bit of copper grease?
Many thanks for your videos and with your lovely wife. Only with love can you do them. So as me, just love and hate LR, haha.

@gregorygardner4513 says:

Don’t forget none of this exists on Queenie.

@cwitechnical says:

you probably know this, and i'm no desktop mechanic, but i've found a bit of warm water and some fairy liquid helps get difficult pipes to slip on. Great video as usual, love the machining!

@20.47, yes the Transit Connect & the 1.0 Ecoboost 3 cylinder which has recently had a recall by Ford as the belt is breaking up & blocking the oil pick up pipe in the sump (you call it an oil pan), at least my old Fiesta has a Peugeot diesel engine in it even though there are some 'dumb ass' design features

@nickb5391 says:

Christian, you are such a creative engineer, making the modified part for the power steering pump, if i knew i could have scaled the barbed wire fence & got you the right part from Solihull & sent it over, great to see Robin at work, tell him to start his own channel, has he seen the woman blacksmith on youtube 'Path of Fire'

@mz2288 says:

The drama queen… lol!

@biz4twobiz463 says:

giving warm shout outs to Vera. She has wonderful personality and commentary on videos. Christian has remarkable skills creating special parts!! Plus, the background sounds are perfectly fine!! I am one, that does not mind. I enjoy knowing your son is hard at work and trying to master his skills. Very well done. Merci

@gordonbarclay6106 says:

Great video again. I love it when you hit a problem and come up with something to resolve it. I sometimes do it myself however if I had a workshop like Christian I could do a lot more. keep up the good work..

@ExhaustCraft1968 says:

You should change your surname to Dedicated, Boy. That word sums you up. Only a few YouTubers can be more dedicated to their hobby.

@patriot4223 says:

Well done, from both of you again.

I can imagine that desperate feeling when you find out that the new part won`t fit and you are not able to get the right one. Whole scale of feelings runs through you body. And after that, when all is gone, something in your mind whispers solution for the problem.
And we have a winner.

I haven`t tried but I have heard that hydraulic lines can be manufactured in special shops using the old metal fittings. Like to tractors, excavators etc.

@alexshapley8331 says:

Wow! (as usual).
Rather worrying that the correct parts were out of stock – but fortunately for your LR3 you have a Christian fabrication specialist on site!
Looking forward to seeing you next Sunday too…

@roversteve53 says:

Great work you two, Just a thought could you not have got a new length of hose fitted to the original ends by a hose shop ?

@kildare1773 says:

You guys are amazing engineers.

@gunnarlandin3258 says:

Why did you not just press new hoses onto the old end pipes? that would have saved you lots of time and money. Any proper hydraulic firm can do this.

@Richie-C says:

Ye need to spoil us and take us on a nice trip in the queen

@Richie-C says:

Incredible job once again

@dougwernham5209 says:

Amazing machining thanks for the video.

@daviddickinson6955 says:

Once Cristian starts machining a new tool or a new piece of hardware I just think I am watching wizardry.

He is a 10x engineer, there cannot be many 10x-ers in the world.

I am floored by your resourcefulness sir!

Hard to believe German electricity was not fit for purpose here. You expect issues however with British home workshops, with my domestic welding antics at one time becoming notorious in taking out the street lights each time I struck an arc.

@darrengraves5230 says:

I am almost convinced I can buy run and fix a disco 4 with the all the content you guys put on

@r.weaver3769 says:

I don't own a Toyota or a LR, but I did stay ay a Holliday Inn not once, but twice. However, wondering the difference between desktop mechanics and armchair mechanics, and where do they get certified and how much for it?
