How odd I had the same thing this last few weeks on my 200tdi. How much water are you loosing or what period of time?

With mine I thought it was a water pump leaking but it turned out to be the cylinder block water gallery to timing case gasket. Bit like the P gasket on the 300tdi… involved job to change too.

Hi, in a nutshell diesel engine oil is not suitable for petrol engines or visa versa. The viscosity index only indicated the working environment that would be suitable.

There are a API and ILSAC codes on the oil which will tell you if the oil is for petrol or diesel. SN, SM, SJ etc are for gasoline engines. Each will denote a performance rating. API is the American Petroleum Institute and you should be able to find out about the codes if you google them.

I am in the US and have a Gas engine and it gets hot here. Over 105 F [40 C] Some ppl are using 15W 40 diesel oil in gas engines. I am still using 10W 30 weight. Is diesel oil OK in the 4 L V8 gas engines?

You drain the oil when the engine is warm Oil will flow better and drain quicker. Would drain until its stops dripping then replace the bung plug.

Keith Tan says:

I have a 300tdi. How long do you really have to drain the oil? Diesel engines in general, do you really have to drain down the oil to the last drop?

Land Rover Toolbox Videos says:

Ask Land Rover.
